Superintendents of Public Instruction Torlakson and Eastin say Ellis is Top of Class for Chair

OAKLAND, Calif. (May 19, 2017): Momentum continues to swell for Kimberly Ellis, who proudly announces the endorsement of California’s Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. Joining Delaine Eastin in support of Ellis, Torlakson is the second Superintendent of Public Instruction and the third constitutional officer in as many days to weigh in for Ellis.

“I’m pleased to announce my support for Kimberly Ellis for Chair of our California Democratic Party. She is a champion for public education. Public education is under attack,” said Torlakson. “That’s why it is vital for the California Democratic Party to prioritize building a bench of public education champions and then to strongly support their endorsed candidates at the ballot box.”

“As evidenced by the 9.53% turnout in Tuesday’s Los Angeles Unified School District election, we have work to do to engage California’s electorate.  It is critical to elect a Party Chair who can inspire voters to participate and make public education in California a priority again. Kimberly Ellis is that Chair. Public education in California is under assault, and we need a state Party Chair who will be nimble enough to recruit and elect Democrats at all levels of government who stands with the children and for their education. We need a warrior for California’s future who will build a strong bench,” said Eastin. “I proudly endorse Kimberly Ellis for Chair. I know she has the best interest of students and teachers; she will not let us down.”

“As the mother of kids who attend public schools, having the support of two of California’s biggest champions for strong, full-funded public education is thrilling. I am honored to have the support of these two distinguished and highly regarded public servants” said Kimberly Ellis.

ENDORSEMENTS FOR NORMA ALCALA ROLL IN

The Women’s Vice Chair position must be converted to a vital and working part of our Democratic Party.

The Yolo County Central Committee in Yolo County, where Norma Alcala and Alex Rooker live, this week voted overwhelmingly to endorse Norma Alcala for CDP Women’s Vice Chair.  Realizing the importance of the endorsement of their home central committee, both candidates fought hard for bragging rights to the endorsement.  Buoyed by a huge groundswell of grassroots activist support, Norma Alcala was able to double the votes of the restricted delegates appointed by elected officials that Alex Rooker brought to the endorsement meeting.

The same pattern occurred last month when the Sacramento County Central Committee also voted overwhelmingly to endorse Norma Alcala.

The Yolo County and Sacramento County Central Committees now join the recent club endorsements from the John F. Kennedy Democratic Club, Wellstone Progressive Democratic Club, River City Democratic Club, Upton Sinclair Democratic Club, and the Sacramento Latino Democratic Club in recently endorsing Norma Alcala. This week Norma Alcala also received the much coveted endorsement of the Chicano Latino Caucus of the California Democratic Party.

Democratic Clubs that had dwindled in membership, now have thousands of new members anxious to contribute to the resistance to the Trump agenda.  We cannot squander this opportunity by treating this election as a proxy fight between Hillary and Bernie supporters. Rather, it is our Party’s chance to welcome this new energy, to embrace young activists delegates, and to mentor and guide their progressive agenda.  We must focus our collective energy on our goal of resistance to the Trump agenda by defeating the Congressmen that carry Trump’s water.

I promise to bring a culture of hard work that works hand in hand with all people.   In 2016, I registered 4000 high school students in various counties: rural and urban. Last month, I registered

April 12, 2017 at Pioneer High School

hundreds in three high schools. Next week I am scheduled to register 523 students at Davis High. These students will be a tsunami in 2018 and 2020.

We need to go after swing Congressional Districts that the Republicans have held for the last three consecutive elections since 2010: the 21st, 10th, 49th, and 39th.  All have a CPVI (Cooks Partisan Voting Index) of five or less.  Join me in making the Women’s Vice Chair job a working position.

Mike Thaller, Candidate for CDP Controller, says “Goodbye” to Progressive Caucus.

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Mike Thaller says Goodbye
to Progressive Caucus.

Progressive Caucus Chair years says “Goodbye” as he runs for CDP Controller.

Mike Thaller, an officer in the Progressive Caucus for 8 years, said “Goodbye” to the Progressive Caucus this morning so he could concentrate on the CDP Controller race and whatever follows it.  Mike has been active in the San Diego County Democratic Party and the CDP for about 14 years and has no intention of leaving either…or the Progressive Caucus.  He declares that it is time to move on from the leadership of the Caucus as he puts his professional experience as a Controller in two separate industries to work for the CDP.

Mike has been a strong advocate of the Caucuses and co-founder of the “Caucus of Caucuses,” empowering the members of the CDP.  We recommend that you read what he had to say to the Caucus…

Goodbye From Mike – at Least For now.
Those of you who are returning Progressive Caucus members probably noticed that I am not running for re-election as Chair.   After two years as a Vice Chair (or was it four?) and four years as the Chair, I am proud of what we have accomplished and the things we have learned.  It’s time to move on to other things, assured that the Caucus will be n good hands. As you are probably aware, I am running for Controller of the CDP.  My concern for the party is the of money from some corporations that put their interests above our platform and resolutions.  The result is that Caucuses, Central Committees, and DSCC members often hit a proverbial brick wall making progress on bills and propositions that we all believe in.  This only serves to make it more difficult to get our candidates elected and the quality of life improved for all Californians.

Most of the other candidates have picked up my mantra on weaning the party from this “Dark Money.” It needs to be carefully done and will take time, but we must take the mood of the country in mind and start.

The choice this Saturday is simple.  Elect a qualified (I was a controller in the film production and then the educational material industries in my professional life) person to be part of the team of officers to return us to being the “Party of the People.”  OR elect someone who has a history of raising money from those very industries that fight our platform and who may well have a conflict of interest by profiting from the position.

I hope you will vote for me for Controller and support me and the other officers in our work towards clean money.  Thank you in advance.
We are the Democratic Party!

CA NURSES ASSN. THROW WEIGHT BEHIND RICARDO LARA’S STATEWIDE BID
Senator Ricardo Lara Scores Impactful Endorsement from California Nurses Association, Grows Coalition of Support Among Working Families

LONG BEACH, CA — Demonstrating the continued strength and force of his campaign for California State Insurance Commissioner, today State Senator Ricardo Lara received a sought-after endorsement from the California Nurses Association.

In announcing their support of Senator Lara’s Insurance Commissioner bid, Deborah Burger, RN co-president, California Nurses Association/National Nurses United released the following statement:

“The California Nurses Association are thrilled to endorse Senator Ricardo Lara for California State Insurance Commissioner. He’s been a fearless leader in the pursuit of healthcare for all, co-authoring California’s innovative single-payer healthcare bill SB562. Moreover, Senator Lara’s spent his career fighting for social and economic justice to help lift up disadvantaged and less fortunate communities from working families to immigrants, and myriad others. We know he’ll be a bold force on behalf of California’s nurses, everyday consumers and all Californians as our state’s next Insurance Commissioner.”

Today’s announcement follows the release the Senator’s new digital video ad, titled, “Embolden,” which takes aim at Donald Trump’s backwards agenda and the President’s comments saying that “California is out of control,” by illustrating the sharp contrast between the Oval Office’s agenda and that of Lara’s.

In recent weeks, Senator Lara, who recently co-introduced Californians for a Healthy California Act (SB 562), which amounts to single-payer healthcare for the state, announced that he is running to serve as California’s State Insurance Commissioner – a statewide elected office dedicated to protecting consumers, enforcing all insurance regulations, and safeguarding Californians’ economic and health security.
Dubbed by the Los Angeles Times as the “Point man in the push for immigrant rights,” Senator Lara, who also previously served as Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus and currently serves as Vice Chair of the California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Caucus, announced his candidacy by previously releasing the following statement:

“Our nation is in full blown crisis mode right now. We have a man in the White House with no popular mandate, who is methodically working to strip Americans of their healthcare, their economic security and their civil liberties.

“I’m running to be California’s next State Insurance Commissioner because I believe at my core that California needs a strong defender, and a counterpuncher, who will stand up to fight our bullying President, Donald Trump, and his increasingly reckless federal government on issues from healthcare access to economic security and more. If millions of Californians begin losing their health insurance because of actions taken by Donald Trump, I will be there to fight him tooth and nail at every pass.

“As California’s Insurance Commissioner, I’ll work tirelessly to represent the great people of California, not the corporations, the billionaire class, the pharmaceutical or the insurance companies. I plan to work with anybody who is willing to come to the table, but my allegiance will always be first and foremost to the consumers, the patients, our working families, and our most vulnerable communities in our Golden State.”

As a State Senator, Ricardo Lara has already been a leader on numerous issues that the office of the Insurance Commissioner interacts with. As stated above, he recently co-introduced a single-payer healthcare system for the state, and also spearheaded the groundbreaking law that provided health care for 170,000 immigrant children, and has played a strong, dynamic role in shaping, implementing and expanding Covered California.

In 2016, Senator Lara engineered the successful statewide campaign to allow for multi-lingual education in California’s schools. He was also one of the key leaders behind a landmark effort to grant driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants in California. This legislation is more important than ever, now that Donald Trump has instructed border patrol agents that they may deport undocumented immigrants for the “crime” of driving without a license.

Senator Lara was born and raised in East Los Angeles and attended schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.  He graduated from San Diego State University with a double major in Journalism and Spanish. He worked as a legislative staffer for years, including working for State Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez and for then-Assemblymember and now State Senate President pro Tem Kevin de Léon. In 2010, Senator Lara was elected to the California State Assembly, and in 2012, he was elected to the California State Senate, where he made history as the first openly gay person of color in the State Senate.

His 33rd Senate District is expansive, encompassing nearly one million people, roughly 70% of which is Latino. The district is located in the heart of the South Bay and stretches from Long Beach to Lynwood, and from Huntington Park to Lakewood and Los Angeles.

Significantly, if elected, Senator Lara would be the first openly gay statewide elected official in California. Today, Senator Lara serves as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee of the California State Senate, considered to be perhaps the most influential committee in the California State Senate.

BAUMAN UNVEILS NEW DIGITAL VIDEO HIGHLIGHTING BOLD IDEAS FOR CDP
Titled, “Bold Ideas,” New Video Illustrates Bauman’s Vision for the California Democratic Party
LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, California Democratic Party Vice Chair, Eric C. Bauman, released a new digital video ad, titled “Bold Ideas.”

To view the ad, click here or on the screen shot below:

Below is a copy of Bauman’s “Bold Ideas” video ad script:

  • This is a bleak time for our country, with Donald Trump and his dystopian worldview attacking every one of our closely held values. But just it’s not enough for the Democratic Party to be the anti-Trump Party.
  • We must unite around our shared progressive agenda.
  • As Democrats across our nation struggle to stay relevant, the successes of the Democratic Party right here in California provide the roadmap back to power.
  • To accomplish this — we must harness the innovation and passion of California’s grassroots Democratic activists, and embrace three core pillars:
  • That we are the Party of the Big Tent.
  • The Party of Bold Ideas.
  • And the Party that is Building the Future.
  • These pillars can’t just be empty rhetoric —  they have to be our reality.
  • That’s why when I’m elected Chair, I will immediately begin live-streaming our meetings so that every Democrat in California, no matter where they’re located, can participate.
  • I am committed to taking on Schwarzenegger’s top-two Primary, which pits Democrat on Democrat and wastes millions of our dollars.
  • And I’ll create the California Democratic Center for Progress and Action — part think tank, part learning and resource center, where activists, elected officials, and our brothers and sisters in organized labor can sit together to solve some of our most vexing problems.
  • I’m very excited about my bold ideas, but they’re just the start.
  • I believe our Party’s greatest strength is the energy and passion is from our diverse grassroots activists.
  • So I want to hear from you, so please email BoldIdeas@EricBauman.com and let me know your thoughts.
  • Together can we raise our Party to the next level, and keep California as the big, blue beacon of hope for our entire nation, and be at the forefront of the resistance to Donald Trump and his hateful agenda.

Eric C. Bauman is the Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party and Chair of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, the largest local Democratic Party in the nation. His campaign for CDP Chair is building a wide-ranging coalition of support that represents every corner of our state and all of its great diversity.

Closing argument

At its core, a campaign is a job interview. Candidates put forth their best plans, demonstrate their strategic abilities and try to persuade potential supporters. And in the end, the voters get to decide who is the best for the role.

Rather than talking about what we would do, we took the initiative to show you. It’s reflected in our campaign and in our ability to create an organic, statewide operation aimed at achieving one singular goal: winning at the ballot box.

For those delegates still on the fence, here’s a final pitch.

Think about each candidate and where they started. Think about what skills and abilities they brought to the table. Think about the opportunities that presented themselves and all of the tools at their disposal. Now think about what they did with all of it. Put this all together and then decide who is your candidate.

That’s how merit-based systems work. It’s never about where you start. It’s always about where you finish.

In the nearly two years since we launched our campaign, our team has built a statewide operation and offered a clear vision of where our Party needs to go next and developed a concrete plan on how to get us there.

Below is an infographic that shows, by the numbers, what we accomplished together.

In the end, a candidate has to put faith in the voters that they will decide for themselves who has proven to be the best.

We stand by our message. We stand by our work. We stand by our achievements. We stand by our campaign to redefine what it means to be a Democrat.

As this first phase of our journey together comes to a close, we are incredibly proud of everything we have accomplished together and I humbly ask for your vote.

California Democrats, as I’ve always said, this election is about our delegation and what we want for our Party’s future. The decision is now yours.

Democratically yours,
