This new bill — a “compromise” between the really extreme and totally extreme wings of the GOP — would still allow insurance companies to leave people with pre-existing conditions out in the cold. As for essential health benefits like doctor’s visits and maternity care, this new plan just kicks the ball over to the states — so if you live in a state with a Republican governor or legislature, you could be out of luck.
And when it comes to jacking up premiums for seniors and cutting $880 billion from Medicaid — two of the main reasons the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected that 24 million Americans would lose their health coverage — nothing has changed at all.
At the end of next week, Donald Trump will mark 100 days in office without much to show for it. Republicans are desperate to give him a big, shiny trophy to wave around — so they’re talking about rushing this new health care debacle through Congress in the next few days.
Last time, the GOP thought they could jam through a disastrous repeal bill before we could stop it. We proved them wrong.
Let’s do it again. Say you’re ready to stop the GOP and protect affordable care:
Here’s what we know: late last night House Republicans, presumably working with Donald Trump, struck a deal that “would likely cause more coverage loss than the last one.” Remember the health care plan that failed last month would have resulted in more than 24 million Americans losing health insurance over the next decade.
It gets worse. This plan would allow insurance companies to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, removing one of the most critical protections of the Affordable Care Act. That would be catastrophic for the 129 million Americans who have some form of a pre-existing condition.
That’s one in three Americans, Michael. Chances are, you or someone you care about could lose coverage if this legislation passes.
We’ve seen this game before: a callous, sloppily-written health care plan that will hurt some of the most vulnerable among us. We stopped the Republicans just a few weeks ago and we can do it again.
Just like before, this comes down to our morals: will we allow them to advance a law that only helps insurance companies and the very wealthy; or will we ensure every American has the right to affordable quality health care?
Kamala will do everything in her power to stop this legislation, but we need you to get involved in ensuring this bill is defeated in the House.
Your voice must be heard in this process. Add your name here, make calls, and demand this plan be defeated. This is important — and your action can make all the difference. Thanks for everything.

At a time when we should be leading the world community, the Trump Administration is openly hostile to confronting climate change. They’re disputing the science behind this global emergency while actively rolling back regulations designed to address it. We can’t shrink from our responsibility to save our planet.
As we speak, naysayers inside Trump’s White House are discussing “whether to recommend [Trump] withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord.”
This historic agreement with nearly 200 others countries would significantly reduce carbon emissions in the United States by 2025. That is an important goal in the fight to save our children’s future. If we abandon this agreement, it will be catastrophic for our planet, for ourselves, and for future generations.
A decision from the White House could come at any moment. That’s why we need you to make your voice heard in this fight before it’s too late:
By no means is this a perfect deal, but I intend to stand up against anyone who suggests there is no such thing as climate change or dilutes our responsibility to address this crisis. This is a moment in time where we must intensify the fight for our future, not abandon it.
I want to take this opportunity to update you on recent events and a couple important dates this week.
It’s National Park Week:
This week is National Park Week, which means free admission into all national parks this weekend on April 22nd and 23rd. Our parks are a natural treasure that we all collectively share, and it is critical that we recognize their importance and the need to preserve them for future generations. Additionally, this Saturday also marks Earth Day. What better way to celebrate than by visiting one a national park and enjoying the amazing natural beauty our country has to offer. The National Park Service has made it simple to find a park near you by visiting their website.
Today is Tax Day:
Each year 150 million Americans file federal income tax returns, and, while April 15th traditionally marks tax day, this year we were given a few extra days to get our taxes done because the 15thfalls on a weekend in 2017. I hope everyone has used these few extra days wisely to put the finishing touches on any last minute filings. If you are unsure of the status of your taxes or you filed early and want to find out if you will receive a refund, the IRS has an easy resource that will allow you to check your filing status and find out your exact refund amount.
Water Update:
Last week, it was announced that for the first time in a decade, Valley farmers have received their full water allocation in the federal service area. The announcement was long overdue, but it was very welcome news for farmers, farm workers, and communities in the San Joaquin Valley. Agriculture is the backbone of our Valley’s economy, and this much needed water will allow farmers to plant the healthy and nutritious crops that feed our nation and world.
While I applaud the announcement, there is no denying that California’s water system is broken, and further action must be taken to move California’s water system into the 21st century. Investments need to be made to build water storage and fix broken water infrastructure, so that more water can be captured during years with above average rain and snowfall. Additionally, the current policies that operate California’s water system are flawed and must be modified. Water that could be stored or used to recharge groundwater aquifers that have been depleted because of the drought is flowing out to the ocean. The status quo not only defies logic but is simply not sustainable.
School Based Health Center Groundbreaking Ceremony in Madera:
This month, I joined the Madera community to celebrate the groundbreaking of Madera’s first School Based Health Center. I commend Camarena Health and Madera Unified School District for their partnership and strong commitment to ensuring that students and their families receive quality health care services. I am a strong advocate for school based community health centers because they provide local residents with accessible and affordable health services.
