ICYMI – Bauman Backed By Education Leaders

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

With Trump in the White House and Betsy DeVos running the Education Department, our schools are under attack and California must lead the way.

For years I have stood with the education community to protect our kids from school vouchers, unregulated charter schools and other schemes to privatize our schools and deny our students the public education they deserve.

I am proud to have stood with the education community to pass Propositions 30 and 55 to keep our schools funded, and with the California Faculty Association for their fight for 5 — ensuring our instructors get fair compensation.

And now the education community is standing with me in my race for Chair of the California Democratic Party.

You have a big decision to make in less than three weeks.

If public education is important to you, please join the following education leaders, along with teachers, paraprofessionals, school board members, parent activists and students across the state as part of #TeamBauman:

  • Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson*
  • The California Faculty Association
  • Josh Pechthalt, President of California Federation of Teachers*
  • Alex Caputo Pearl, President of United Teachers Los Angeles*
  • Hon. Paul Fong, President of San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers*
  • California College Democrats
  • The three past presidents of the California Teachers Association*
    • Dean Vogel
    • David Sanchez
    • Barbara Kerr
  • And many more

Will you join them?

Democratically Yours,

Eric C. Bauman
Vice Chair, California Democratic Party
Chair, Los Angeles County Democratic Party

“CFA is very proud to endorse Eric Bauman for Democratic Party Chair. He is a steadfast ally of the faculty union, someone who values one of California’s greatest assets, our universities! Democrats have a great leader in Eric. The 27,000 faculty, coaches, librarians and counselors of the CSU stand in strong support of Eric Bauman.” — Jennifer Eagan, President, California Faculty Association

“Eric Bauman’s vigorous dedication to improving local neighborhood schools and protecting students and classroom teachers is unrivaled in this race. No other candidate matches his experience, skill-sets, and deep commitment to the cause of the labor movement, standing up for working families, but most importantly, ensuring that all students of all backgrounds in our state receive the best education possible. I’ve just described a few of the many reasons why I’m proud to back Eric C. Bauman for Chair of the California Democratic Party.” — Josh Pechthalt, President, California Federation of Teachers*

“I’m proud to endorse Eric Bauman for Chair of the California Democratic Party. Eric has been an effective leader for Democrats across the Golden State, from working to advance progressive policies that improve our education system to being a champion for working people and much more. I know Eric will make an excellent Chair of the state Democratic Party.” — Tom Torlakson, California Superintendent of Public Instruction*

“I’m pleased to join the broad coalition of grassroots activists, labor leaders, elected officials and organizations backing Eric Bauman for Chair of the California Democratic Party. Eric has been a force, and a bold leader for grassroots Democrats across the state. He’s also been a champion for classroom teachers, students and good schools. We have worked closely with Eric to ensure the LA Unified School Board maintains a pro-teacher, pro-student majority and to defeat ‘so-called’ reforms that would undermine California’s commitment that every student is entitled to a free, high quality public education. I know he’ll make us proud as the California Democratic Party’s next Chair.” — Alex Caputo-Pearl, President, United Teachers Los Angeles*

Americans aren’t cruel

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Today I am disheartened by the cruelty of House Republicans for passing their mean-spirited anti-health care bill.

House Republicans voted to take health care away from an estimated 24 million Americans. The bill rescinds Medicaid expansion, allows states to opt out of Affordable Care Act rules prohibiting insurers from charging sick people higher premiums, and eliminates federal subsidies on insurance plans simply for offering abortion coverage.

The bill is devastating for people all over the country, and if it becomes law, would be particularly devastating for many Californians. Over 5 million Californians receive insurance through our Medi-Cal expansion. All insurance plans in California offer abortion coverage as a matter of state law. The bill could cost the state $160 billion in federal revenue. That’s inhumane.

We are not a cruel country. I believe that this is the work of a few radical individuals supported by the top 1%. The only “winners” are those making over $200,000 a year who will receive a tax cut worth $346 billion over 10 years.

But while I am disheartened by the cruelty of these few individuals, I am heartened by my belief that these are not the values of the vast majority of Americans. They most definitely are not the values of most Californians.

Saul Alinsky wrote that there are only two types of power, money and people. But people are only powerful when they are organized. It is time for Californians to unite, and turn back the tide of cruelty that threatens our country. We must do better.

In solidarity,

Let’s send a message to Big Pharma

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Friends,

For far too long, greedy insurance and pharmaceutical companies have prayed on poor communities, prioritizing their profits over the lives of sick people.

It doesn’t have to be like this. Americans pay by far the most for prescription drugs in the developed world, largely because of our inability to regulate Big Pharma. It’s immoral, nonsensical, and need to be stopped.

That’s why I’m spearheading an effort in the California Legislature to shine a spotlight on drug manufacturers and their skyrocketing pharmaceutical drug prices. SB 17 requires drugmakers to provide written notification to the state and to insurers when they decide to raise prices or introduce a new and very expensive drug, ensuring for the first time that they explain to the public why their drugs cost so much.

Despite Big Pharma’s high profile, it still operates in the shadows, and the industry likes it that way. Companies can suddenly jack up the prices of their signature drugs with no justification.

Big Pharma wants us to believe that such costs reflect the expensive nature of research and development. But a study found that for every $1 drug companies spend on R&D, they spend $19 on advertising.

This isn’t the first time we’ve tried to crack down on the pharmaceutical industry. Time and again, California and other states have tried to force Big Pharma to reveal the true costs of drugs, only to be blocked by its powerful lobby.

But we cannot let the current paradigm continue, where millions of sick people are faced with an impossible choice: pay for life-saving medicine or pay their mortgage and other necessities.

Please join us in holding Big Pharma accountable. It’s time to shine a light into the deep shadows of drug pricing.

Thanks,

Dr. Ed Hernandez
California State Senator
Candidate for Lt. Governor, 2018

This is heinous

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Today, we witnessed a vote that has begun the process of dismantling the Affordable Care Act. This bill will let insurance companies overcharge patients with pre-existing conditions and allow states to decide what they want to cover. The truly heinous part about this vote is that the House Republicans did not allow a hearings process to debate the bill, they did not wait for the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to release their expected impact of the bill and now millions of Americans are one step closer to losing their healthcare.

Even though this is a nationwide travesty, this really hits home for the 3-4 million Californians that are on the brink of losing their health coverage. We must work together to stop these out of touch politicians in Washington from ruining the lives of so many hard-working Americans.

This isn’t the world that I want to live in.  House Republicans want to replace and deface the ACA— I want to improve and embrace it.  I know you do too, and together we will.  That’s why I support SB 562, the Healthy California Act, making sure that California has an alternative and takes a different road.

In Solidarity,

A husband, father, grandfather, practicing optometrist, and local businessman, “Dr. Ed” (as he is known to his patients) has spent his life bringing quality eye care to predominantly low-income communities.  As a health care provider, the need to improve access to health care for all Californians is what first drove him to run for office.

Since being elected to the Assembly in 2006 and the Senate in 2010, Dr. Ed Hernandez has been a leader on the implementation of federal health care reform – helping expand access to affordable health care, control costs, and improve the network of providers so people can actually get quality care when they need it. Dr. Ed has been a champion by expanding educational opportunity to qualified students overlooked by our public schools and universities, as well as a major proponent for government reform, including fixing a broken initiative system too often hijacked by billionaires and wealthy corporations. Dr. Ed Hernandez is running to take this experience, leadership, and vision to the next level by serving the people of California as their Lieutenant Governor.

Hey California – time to F.L.E.X. our collective muscle to support our brothers and sisters in Labor!

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

KELogo

t’s time the California Democratic Party (CDP) doubles down on our commitment to Labor, so that we stand shoulder to shoulder to face the anti-worker initiatives on the horizon. We must F.L.E.X. our political and financial muscles to advance our shared values and beat back this onslaught of growing attacks.

This F.L.E.X. Plan works in conjunction with my goals to reorganize and restructure our Party, getting us “Back to Basics” by focusing on organizing, training and leadership development. Advocating for pro-Labor candidates, worker’s rights, workplace safety and protecting working families; these commitments are a part of our collective core.

As Chair of the California Democratic Party (CDP), I will ensure that we vigorously support Labor with the same incredible consistency that Labor has supported our Party. It’s time for the CDP to have a bigger, better, bolder relationship with our sisters and brothers in Labor, expanding a pro-Labor culture here in California and serving as a beacon of hope for the rest of the country.

Fund: Sustainably grow CDP’s donor base and budget capacity so Labor can redirect critical funds to fight Right-to-Work initiatives, etc.

Legislate: Pass pro-worker legislation (Medicare-for-All, living wage reform, publicly financed campaigns, etc.) so Labor can prioritize other critical issues at the bargaining table.

Evolve: Collaborate with Labor to increase membership, bargaining and political power, while tackling racial justice, gender parity and economic equity.

eXchange: Partner on campaigns, train organizers and unite a new generation of leaders.
