The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.
Today I am disheartened by the cruelty of House Republicans for passing their mean-spirited anti-health care bill.
House Republicans voted to take health care away from an estimated 24 million Americans. The bill rescinds Medicaid expansion, allows states to opt out of Affordable Care Act rules prohibiting insurers from charging sick people higher premiums, and eliminates federal subsidies on insurance plans simply for offering abortion coverage.
The bill is devastating for people all over the country, and if it becomes law, would be particularly devastating for many Californians. Over 5 million Californians receive insurance through our Medi-Cal expansion. All insurance plans in California offer abortion coverage as a matter of state law. The bill could cost the state $160 billion in federal revenue. That’s inhumane.
We are not a cruel country. I believe that this is the work of a few radical individuals supported by the top 1%. The only “winners” are those making over $200,000 a year who will receive a tax cut worth $346 billion over 10 years.
But while I am disheartened by the cruelty of these few individuals, I am heartened by my belief that these are not the values of the vast majority of Americans. They most definitely are not the values of most Californians.
Saul Alinsky wrote that there are only two types of power, money and people. But people are only powerful when they are organized. It is time for Californians to unite, and turn back the tide of cruelty that threatens our country. We must do better.
