The vote I just cast

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Team,
A few hours ago, I cast a vote on the Senate floor to cancel President Trump’s national emergency declaration.
Trump’s inability to follow through on his campaign promise to build a wall is not a national emergency. And my vote today is a rebuke of his most repeated promise because this wall runs counter to our most fundamental values and it’s a massive waste of taxpayer dollars.
I’ve always believed that what you say about other people often says more about you.
For the past two years, I’ve listened to this president use words like invasion, infestation, and alien to describe immigrants coming to our nation — many fleeing violence and oppression in their home countries. Using that kind of harmful, dehumanizing rhetoric about human beings trying to give their families a better life is against everything this country must always stand for.
We are a nation that’s going to be defined by how we uplift the dignity of other people — seeing the humanity in others no matter where they come from.
We’re at a time where leaders like Trump are trying to instill fear in all of us and make us afraid of each other, because he knows that’s the only way he can win.
But I refuse to surrender to that kind of cynicism. Right now in this fight, there are agents of fear and agents of love — which one will you be?
Keep fighting,
Cory

Running for president

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

I write to ask you to join me in a campaign to serve this country as the next President of the United States. At this moment of truth — at this moment where we could make or break our democracy, where we will decide the fate of generations to come on this planet — we must all ask what each of us can give to this country and to the people who will inherit the consequences of our choices.

Amy and I have decided that running to serve America as president is the best way for us to do our part, understanding that we have an historic opportunity to join with millions of our fellow Americans at a time like no other.

The challenges we face are the greatest in living memory. The connected crises in our economy, our democracy and our climate will either consume us or they will afford us the opportunity to demonstrate our resolve, our creativity and our courage.

In other words, this moment of peril produces what is perhaps our greatest moment of promise. We can have a government that serves people instead of corporations. We can invest in the dignity of those working and those seeking work, no matter their gender, race or background. We can guarantee high quality health care to every single American. We can remind ourselves that if immigration is a problem, it’s a great one to have, and ensure that we create lawful paths to enter the country to work, to join family, to flee persecution. We can achieve real justice reform and confront the hard truths of slavery, segregation and suppression. We can listen to and lift up rural communities. We can restore American leadership, find peaceful solutions to global challenges, and end decades-long wars while delivering for every woman and man who has served in them. And we can unleash the ingenuity and political will of millions of Americans to meet the existential threat of climate change before it’s too late.

No one candidate or president, no matter how tough or talented or experienced, can meet these challenges on their own. Only this country can do that, and only if we build a movement that includes all of us – not just to vote and volunteer, but to understand that for democracy to flourish and meet these challenges, it is an everyday responsibility, one that doesn’t end when the ballots are counted.

We saw the truth of that in Texas over the last two years – people from all walks of life, every part of the state, coming together in record numbers, creating something greater and more powerful than the sum of the people involved. I saw firsthand how the purpose and function that we all crave can be found in serving others and serving this country.

This campaign will be positive. We will define ourselves by what we want to achieve and accomplish for America. It will be animated by an ambition for the country that recognizes that the challenges we face will only be overcome by lifting each other up; that the opportunities before us will only be realized by overcoming the differences between us — of party, of geography, of race, of gender, of faith — before they define us forever.

We seek the Democratic nomination by listening to and learning from the people we wish to serve. We are running a campaign for everyone. That’s why, wherever you are in the United States — from Alaska to Puerto Rico — I want you to be part of this. I want this to be your campaign. A campaign by all of us for all of us.

In the coming days I will travel to introduce myself to my fellow Americans and to listen to the people I meet. In those conversations I want to discuss how we can bring the power and ingenuity of the American people to bear on the challenges we face.

On March 30th we will officially kick off this campaign in my hometown of El Paso. I want you to be there with me then if you can. I’m also asking you to help organize others in your community to make sure that we build the greatest grassroots campaign this country has ever seen. No PACs, just people.

There’s more to come, but I want to leave you with this:

The only way to live up to the promise of this country at this moment of maximum peril and maximum potential is to give it our all and to give it for all of us. We are now, more than ever, the last best hope of Earth. Let’s show ourselves and those who succeed us in this great country what we are made of and what we can do.

If you are ready to be part of this effort, please make a donation to help us kick off our campaign the right way.

A Texas-Sized Announcement

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Friend,

I’ve got some big news — this morning my campaign announced that we have now received more than 30 endorsements from elected and appointed officials from across Texas!

“This is a critical moment in our nation’s political history,” said former San Antonio Mayor and HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros. “These times demand a candidate with the vision of an executive, the heart of a powerful personal story and a successful track record of not just talking about bold policy, but delivering results. As Mayor of the nation’s seventh-largest city and a Cabinet Secretary of a complex agency that touches Americans at every level along the economic spectrum, Julián Castro has proven himself at every step of the way, which is why he’s my choice to be the next President of the United States.”

From State Representatives to County Judges, from members of Congress to a former Cabinet Secretary, our campaign is quickly picking up support all across my home state. I’ve spent much of my life campaigning with Texas Democrats up and down the ballot, and I’m humbled by the support of so many outstanding colleagues.

My home state has been ignored by presidential campaigns for decades. But in my campaign, everyone counts. I know with your support, too, we can win Texas’s 38 electoral votes in November of 2020.

Sincerely,
Julián

Tell President Trump: It’s time to end the United States’ support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen

A war most Americans know little about and that Congress never voted to authorize.

Sisters and Brothers –

Yesterday evening, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution I introduced that will end our country’s support for a morally indefensible Saudi-led war in Yemen — a war most Americans know little about and that Congress never voted to authorize.

This bill, co-sponsored by Senators Mike Lee of Utah and Chris Murphy of Connecticut, is the first time that Congress has successfully utilized the War Powers Act, passed 45 years ago, by coming together in this way to say that the constitutional authority for declaring war rests with the United States Congress — not the president, whether that president is a Democrat or Republican.

I expect that it will pass the House next, where our friend and national campaign co-chair, Congressman Ro Khanna, has introduced a similar bill.

Not surprisingly, given our president’s deep affection for authoritarian regimes, the White House has threatened to veto this bill if it gets to Trump’s desk.

So what I want to do today is make sure President Trump knows that it isn’t just the United States Senate and House of Representatives that believes we should end our involvement in this humanitarian catastrophe, but the American people do as well.

So I want to ask:

Sign my petition: say that you support legislation that will end the United States’ involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, a war that has caused the greatest humanitarian catastrophe on our planet today.

Our support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen has been one of the great moral stains on our nation resulting in the worst humanitarian crisis on earth.

During the last several years more than 85,000 children in Yemen have starved to death, while millions more face imminent starvation.

With the water infrastructure destroyed by Saudi bombs, 10,000 new cases of cholera occur each week as people are unable to find clean drinking water.

And the truth is, by continuing to back Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen with weapons, aerial refueling, and targeting assistance, the United States has been complicit in this humanitarian catastrophe — one that no one can seriously claim is actually making us any safer.

So yesterday, with our vote in the Senate, we said enough is enough. Enough killing. Enough starvation. Enough destruction. This is the time to tell Saudi Arabia, and indeed the rest of the world, that we will no longer be a partner to the horrific crisis in Yemen.

Next, I expect the House of Representatives will do the same.

Then it goes to the president’s desk. But before it does, I want to make a request:

Please sign my petition: say that you support legislation that will end the United States’ involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, a war that has caused the greatest humanitarian catastrophe on our planet today.

The historic importance of this resolution is not only moving the United States out of that horrific war, but having the country see that their elected representatives are about to take back their constitutional responsibilities on the issues of war, one of the most important functions that the United States Congress has.

Thank you for adding your name.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders

k. But we hope you’ll stay, because emails are such an important part of how we organize and how we raise money. In fact, there is no single greater source for our campaign’s fundraising than emails like this one. And that’s important, because no one person, not even Bernie Sanders, can take on Trump and the billionaire class alone.

Before you go about the rest of your day, help power our fight against the billionaire class by making a contribution today.

One of my favorite things about being on the campaign trail

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Face to face, person to person.
Warren for President

I used to be a school-teacher, and I loved watching faces. It felt like a victory every time I saw the click! when a student understood a really hard idea.

And that means I’m still a face-watcher.

When I’m out on the road at our events across the country, I look out into the crowds and watch people’s faces to see if what we’re talking about is hitting home.

I see them nod when I tell a story — because it’s their story, too.

I see how they react when we talk about our plans for big, structural change. Like the Ultra-Millionaire Tax, and how it would fully pay for Universal Child Care (and then some).

I watch as it clicks for people. Their faces light up as they realize that we could actually do this. We have a plan. This could work.

People come up to me afterwards for a hug and to tell me that they’re hopeful.

They’re in this fight because they believe we can make change. They know we’re in a tough place as a country. Sometimes they have tears in their eyes — about health care, or the environment, or student loans, or anything else they’re worried about. But they know there’s a roadmap to get somewhere better.

They’re right. To me, this is what hope is all about: We see what’s wrong, we figure out how to fix it, and we make it happen. We dream big and fight hard.

Side by side, shoulder to shoulder, we won’t just build a movement and deliver a win in 2020. We’ll deliver real change.

We’re going to do this. You and me. I’ll keep fighting, but I can’t do it alone. Pitch in $3 or whatever you can and let’s make it happen.

This is a grassroots-powered campaign, through and through. No glitzy fundraisers where you can only get in if you write a giant check. No federal lobbyists buying favors. No Super PACs, no corporate PACs — heck, no PACs of any kind.

Since I’m not running around trying to scoop up buckets of cash from big-money fundraising events, I can spend more time talking with people at events across the country. I can go to places that are getting left behind in this economy — where there might not be a ton of super-rich donors.

Face to face, person to person, we talk about real problems and real solutions for how we’ll build a grassroots movement to make Washington work for everyone, not just a thin slice at the top.

And I get to make the most fun thank you calls in the world. Instead of only calling people who can raise a bazillion dollars, I talk with school-teachers, power plant operators, servers — people who’ve counted their pennies and pitched in any amount to our campaign.

This is the right way to run a campaign: Grassroots up, with no special access for the wealthy. But it’s also an experiment, and it makes grassroots donations from emails like this one even more powerfully important.

Please make your first donation to keep building our grassroots movement and know that this is possible because of you.

I hope to see your face at an event soon.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth
