A war most Americans know little about and that Congress never voted to authorize.

Sisters and Brothers –

Yesterday evening, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution I introduced that will end our country’s support for a morally indefensible Saudi-led war in Yemen — a war most Americans know little about and that Congress never voted to authorize.

This bill, co-sponsored by Senators Mike Lee of Utah and Chris Murphy of Connecticut, is the first time that Congress has successfully utilized the War Powers Act, passed 45 years ago, by coming together in this way to say that the constitutional authority for declaring war rests with the United States Congress — not the president, whether that president is a Democrat or Republican.

I expect that it will pass the House next, where our friend and national campaign co-chair, Congressman Ro Khanna, has introduced a similar bill.

Not surprisingly, given our president’s deep affection for authoritarian regimes, the White House has threatened to veto this bill if it gets to Trump’s desk.

So what I want to do today is make sure President Trump knows that it isn’t just the United States Senate and House of Representatives that believes we should end our involvement in this humanitarian catastrophe, but the American people do as well.

So I want to ask:

Sign my petition: say that you support legislation that will end the United States’ involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, a war that has caused the greatest humanitarian catastrophe on our planet today.

Our support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen has been one of the great moral stains on our nation resulting in the worst humanitarian crisis on earth.

During the last several years more than 85,000 children in Yemen have starved to death, while millions more face imminent starvation.

With the water infrastructure destroyed by Saudi bombs, 10,000 new cases of cholera occur each week as people are unable to find clean drinking water.

And the truth is, by continuing to back Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen with weapons, aerial refueling, and targeting assistance, the United States has been complicit in this humanitarian catastrophe — one that no one can seriously claim is actually making us any safer.

So yesterday, with our vote in the Senate, we said enough is enough. Enough killing. Enough starvation. Enough destruction. This is the time to tell Saudi Arabia, and indeed the rest of the world, that we will no longer be a partner to the horrific crisis in Yemen.

Next, I expect the House of Representatives will do the same.

Then it goes to the president’s desk. But before it does, I want to make a request:

Please sign my petition: say that you support legislation that will end the United States’ involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, a war that has caused the greatest humanitarian catastrophe on our planet today.

The historic importance of this resolution is not only moving the United States out of that horrific war, but having the country see that their elected representatives are about to take back their constitutional responsibilities on the issues of war, one of the most important functions that the United States Congress has.

Thank you for adding your name.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders

Tell President Trump: It’s time to end the United States’ support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.
