t’s news in Alabama, Michae

Democrats/Join us.

I’m alarmed by last night’s news in Alabama.

Last night, Republicans in the Alabama state Senate voted to ban nearly all abortions, at all stages of pregnancy, even in cases of rape or incest. They voted to impose draconian criminal penalties — like a 99-year prison sentence — for doctors who perform abortions in the state.

I’m disgusted by this blatant attack against women and our health care, which is part of a larger extremist effort to overturn Roe v. Wade. But I’m not losing sight of how we can make sure this does not happen across the nation: By electing Democrats everywhere in 2019 and 2020, including states like Alabama.

Just look at how we got here:

  • A Republican president nominated two extremist, anti-choice justices to the Supreme Court, tipping the court’s balance against abortion rights;
  • Both justices were narrowly confirmed by a Republican-controlled Senate;
  • Republican-controlled state legislatures took their cue and passed 6-week abortion bans in Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio. Now, Republican lawmakers have essentially banned abortion outright in Alabama. (more…)

Big announcement → How the DNC and our presidential candidates are working together in bold, new ways

Never before has it been so important we suport our candidates while building the infrastructure our eventual nominee will need to win. Here’s how we’re doing that:

Democrats/Join us.

I wanted to share an update on how the DNC is working with our presidential candidates in brand new, innovative ways as a part of our commitment to running a fair and transparent primary.

In the coming weeks, you’ll start hearing from Democratic presidential candidates directly through emails like this one — but that’s far from all we’re doing to make sure Democrats win in 2020. Read below for more information, and stay tuned.

Onward,

Tom

With a historic number of Democratic presidential candidates competing for the nomination and a deeply troubling Republican presidency threatening our democracy, Democratic unity has never been more important. That’s why we committed to creating a fair, transparent, and even-handed presidential primary process at the DNC early on.

Our large field of candidates is a good thing for our party. They’re talented, they’re diverse, and they present an opportunity to mobilize grassroots voters across the country like never before. And never before has it been so important for the party to support our candidates while we build the infrastructure that our eventual nominee will need to win in 2020.

Thanks to the incredible support of voters, activists, and organizers around the country, this work is well under way at the DNC. No matter who our nominee is, he or she will be in a much stronger position because of it.

Republicans are infringing on a woman’s right to choose in these states → Add your name to fight back

Democrats/Join us.

I’m disgusted. Republican Governor Brian Kemp has moved from suppressing voters to suppressing women, Michael. Kemp just signed one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country into law in Georgia. This is a watershed moment for women’s rights across the country — and we need your help.

In four states, Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi, and now Georgia, Republicans are trying to make it illegal for a woman to get an abortion after as little as six weeks — before many women even know they are pregnant. This law is the latest in a flood of anti-woman bills coming from Republican-controlled legislatures as a part of a scheme to overturn Roe v. Wade — and we must fight back.

Women’s reproductive rights are first and foremost a health care issue. A patient’s health should drive important medical decisions, not a politician’s beliefs — and those decisions should be made among women, their families, and their doctors. A central tenet of our Democratic party is to keep abortion safe and legal in this country.

Demand that a woman’s right to choose continues to be safe, legal, and constitutionally protected nationwide: Add your name today.

AG Barr must be removed from office [Add your name]

We must take action to protect our democracy.

Three things are clear after Attorney General Barr’s disturbing Senate testimony on Wednesday:
  • He lied to Congress (that’s a crime).
  • He has clearly disqualified himself from supervising the 14 criminal referrals from the Special Counsel.
  • He must resign — or be impeached — immediately.
If the American people are ever going to discover the full extent of the crimes committed by the Trump campaign and administration (and potentially our president himself), Barr must be removed from office.
