The results are final and we will be in the general. Thanks to all of you and your hard work for all of your support. We earned over 40,000 votes in the primary and are now getting together a plan of action to secure over 100,000 votes for the general. That will be a record for a Democratic candidate in this district. You can help us do that.
In other news I joined some Fresno County activist in front of our Congressman’s office on Wednesday to demand the House vote on whether or not persons on the “no fly” list should be allowed to purchase guns. Today the Speaker announced that the House would vote on one of these bills when they return to work next week.
The USDA along with other organizations will be hosting a summit in July at the Visalia Convention Center as a part of the #RuralPride campaign. This summit will be an opportunity to “focus on the unique needs of the rural LGBT community.” There will be information about important federal policy to protect this community. This summit is open to all LGBT members and allies for the purpose of sharing information. Christine Chavez, granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, is one of the many organizers helping to put his event together. More information is available on the Facebook event page:
Finally, the campaign will be conducting another demonstration this week. We will be in front of our Congressman’s Visalia office to remind him that we need immigration reform now.
Thank you all for your continued support and let’s keep this thing going into November.

On the Fourth of July, we celebrate our nation’s history, traditions, and democracy. We pause on Independence Day to reflect on the freedoms and ideals we as a nation share, and to honor those who fight to protect our way of life.
Today is a day to remember the brave men and women who have fought to protect our freedoms and honor the memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. There are a number of ways to get involved and help honor our nation’s heroes. Support these individuals by wearing a yellow ribbon, donating to military families, or personally thanking a veteran or soldier.

As we head into summer, I wanted to provide you with an update on my recent activity in Congress to improve workers’ rights and safe working environments.
Extending rights to Transportation Security Administration employees
Although members of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are federal employees, they lack certain employee rights granted to federal employees of other agencies. For this reason, I signed on as a cosponsor of the Rights for Transportation Security Officers Actof 2016 (H.R. 4488), which would give TSA workers the same rights as other employees. Although TSA workers are unionized, the legislation would allow TSA officers to access collective bargaining and whistleblower protections, join the General Service wage scale, and appeal to a third party if necessary.
Supporting seasonal federal employees
Last month, I voted for legislation to ensure seasonal employees in our land management agencies can apply as federal employees to other federal positions. Firefighters, scientists, and other time-limited employees should have the right to compete for a permanent appointment at any federal agency under their rightful status as federal employees. H.R. 4906 unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives on June 7, 2016, and is now pending in the U.S. Senate.
Reducing occupational hazards
I recently cosponsored the Voluntary Protection Program Act (H.R. 2500), bipartisan legislation that would establish a line item for Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA)Voluntary Protection Program. This would encourage the Secretary of Labor to enter cooperative agreements with employers to foster overarching safety and health management systems and protect employees from occupational hazards. There are more than 1400 VPP sites in the United States, including several in our Valley.
Thank you for taking the time to read this update on labor-related news. Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding this or any federal issue of your concern. To stay up to date on the work I am doing in Congress please visit my website at costa.house.gov and sign up for my e-newsletter here.
Since assuming the office of Controller 18 months ago, I and my team mind the store for California with experienced financial management and independent fiscal oversight that is effective, efficient, and transparent.
By the numbers, some major accomplishments to date include:
— $2.5 billion in public funds uncovered by my audit team subject to unallowed and wasteful uses.
— $180 million paid by the Franchise Tax Board in refunds to 360,000 lower-income working households in the initial year of the CA Earned Income Tax Credit a Program.
— Significant savings from not having to borrow externally to pay the state’s bills due to the focused diligence of my cash management team.
— Timely releases of the State of California Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal years ended June 30, 2014 and June 30, 2015, by my accounting and financial reporting team, showing the State’s fiscal year each ending with a positive net position and containing no findings against the Controller’s office in ensuring the proper accounting and reporting of the State’s fiscal resources.
Yet more than the numbers:
— I am proud of the work of my team on the stakeholder-driven State Lands Commission Strategic Plan, the first ever adopted to guide the stewardship of our public trust lands.
— I am working to do all that is possible to sustain our pension funds for our public sector employees and educators and their beneficiaries, focusing on reducing costs, mitigating risks, and minimizing volatility through asset allocation, asset liability management, and corporate engagement.
Each day, I am inspired by the deep dedication and highest standards of professionalism exhibited by the staff team whom I have the privilege to lead. There is much work yet to be done, and I hope I can count on your support.
Please make a contribution TODAY in the amount of $500, $250, $100, or $50 to sustain and build on the track record I have established thus far as California’s chief fiscal officer and independent fiscal watchdog.
