John Burton is supporting my campaign for State Treasurer! John gave me and a lot of other women our start in public service. He taught me how to speak out for social justice, how to stand by your principles, and how to lead and make California a better place for everyone.
I greatly appreciate what John Burton had to say about my candidacy: “Fiona’s commitment to advancing socially responsible investments and job expansion make her the only choice to manage California’s finances as our next State Treasurer.”
I had the opportunity to visit this amazing program at the Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton, where the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry trains veterans for jobs. Instructor Sean is a grateful and excited graduate of the program who now teaches master welding to other Marines transitioning back to civilian life.
While in San Francisco, I participated in a meeting about food insecurity and hungerand ways to raise awareness about this very real issue with Mayor Ed Lee and Bill Mattos and Ira Brill of Foster Farms.
I testified at the State Capitol on Assemblyman Evan Low’s AB 280, which would create a new checkbox on California tax returns: “Rape Kit Voluntary Contribution Fund.”This money will assist with the backlog of rape kits waiting to be tested. Nationally, there are 400,000 rape kits sitting on shelves while the statute of limitations clock keeps ticking. Justice delayed is justice denied. #EndTheBacklog
It was a packed house for our 5th Cannabis Banking Working Group Meeting convened by State Treasurer John Chiang. Congressman Dana Rohrabacher gave us the federal lay of the land, and it’s not positive. He advised California to take the lead and find a workable solution to banking the industry, so other states, and eventually the federal government, will have to get on board. Our next and final meeting will be on August 10th in Los Angeles.
While visiting the Central Valley, I took this photo at the Modesto Arch: “Water – Wealth – Contentment – Health.” Fun fact: Filmmaker George Lucas, who was born in Modesto, graduated from Thomas Downey High School in 1962, and attended Modesto Junior College, immortalized the city in his award-winning 1973 film, American Graffiti.
Check out this cool place to have a BBQ — with Laborers’ Local 300 at Santa Anita Park!
#MaSquad interns get the point! They are working on very interesting tax research projects this summer, and I cannot wait to hear their presentations.

From Tinaj For Governor Committee:
We heard you loud and clear. Our dishonest politicians are dividing our country, our state and our people. The Democratic Party finally has a young, honest and powerful leader with a vision and powerful voice who is running for governor in 2018.
A leader who is going to fight for all the people of California and not for special interest.
A leader who is going to fight for liberty, justice and equality.
A leader who is going to bring back jobs to the working class people and invest in small business.
A leader who is going to fix our broken education system, roads, bridges and airports.
A leader who is going to get our state out of debt by stopping the useless spending, late and unbalanced budgets.
A leader who is going to invest in clean water and air.
A leader who is willing to build affordable housing, shelters, and support services for low income or no income people.
A leader who is able to unite our people once again and give the power back to the people.
A leader who puts truth over fiction and love over hate.
We the Tinaj for Governor Committee pledge that Klement Tinaj will be that bright new leader who is going to be the voice and the change for the people of California.
About the only person these days who thinks Devin Nunes is doing a good job is President Trump.
That’s because Trump knows Nunes is his water boy. Trump only has to snap his fingers and Nunes comes running. Worse, Nunes says whatever the Trump White House tells him to say.
Including compromising a Congressional investigation into Russian interference in our elections.
THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!
Enough is enough. Demand Nunes resign immediately from the House Intelligence Committee. Add your name here.
Devin Nunes has compromised his independence and responsibility as a member of Congress. He would rather surrender his integrity to aid and abet Trump, than find the truth.
That’s why I’m a Democrat running for Congress against Nunes. I’m a prosecutor and will fight tooth and nail to uncover the truth about Trump and Nunes’s Russian ties.
We need real leadership in Congress—not a Trump puppet and rubber stamp like Devin Nunes.
IN CA LT. GOV BID, SEN. HERNANDEZ UNVEILS GRIPPING NEW DIGITAL VIDEO AD
Titled, “Record of Progress,” Digital Video Features Testimonials from Everyday Californians Impacted By Senator Ed Hernandez’ Forward-Thinking Leadership LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA — Illustrating his expansive and tangible record of progress and leadership on a range of public policy issues, from job creation to environmental protection, and from bolstering healthcare access to immigrant rights policies and raising the state’s smoking age to 21, today State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez’ campaign for California Lieutenant Governor rolled out its new digital video ad, titled “Record of Progress.”
To view Senator Hernandez’ “Record of Progress,” digital video ad, click here or on the screen shot below.
The script of the ad follows in bold text, along with notes about each validator, pasted below:
“A leader is measured not just by their own story — but how they impact the story of others… Senator Ed Hernandez has dedicated his career to helping others. Here are their stories…”
“If it wasn’t for Ed Hernandez, I wouldn’t be able to afford health insurance. Now I can — and no longer do I have to choose between paying my mortgage or paying my medical bills.”
— Mercedes Lascano Garcia, a senior who was nearly priced out of healthcare coverage prior to Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez’ work in the State Legislature as Heath Committee Chair. In this capacity, Senator Hernandez was one of the primary architects behind the implementation of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act here in California, a program called Covered California, which has become a national model for access and coverage.
“He helped invest in job-training programs, ensure livable wages, and create good paying middle class jobs to help people like me make ends meet.”
— Matt Gruber, an electrician who was trained through an apprenticeship program and now works in California’s entertainment industry, primarily on television and movie studio sets, highlights Hernandez’ record on a range of job and economic issues. The Senator’s record on these policies spans from his backing of a landmark statewide minimum wage increase to $15 per hour, to supporting some of the nation’s toughest workers’ rights laws, to his advancing of the film and entertainment tax credits which addresses runaway production and aims to keep entertainment jobs in the Golden State, to his championing of investments in workforce development, apprenticeship and job-training, vocational and career technical programs that help make California the ideal choice for businesses who need skilled workers, and more.
“I’m thankful Senator Ed Hernandez had the courage to take on big tobacco and raise California’s smoking age to 21. His law will help keep kids safe and prevent them from smoking in the first place.”
— Todd McGuire, father of Kaitlyn McGuire, expressed his appreciation for Senator Hernandez’ successful effort to stand up to powerful tobacco interests and increase the legal age to purchase any tobacco products to 21 years old.
“Traffic and the smog it causes hurts our economy and leads to all kinds of respiratory illnesses. Ed Hernandez worked to ease traffic, combat pollution, protect our environment, and tackle climate change.”
— Marlen Garcia, former Baldwin Park City Council Member, discusses Senator Hernandez’ record of supporting progressive environmental policies, like SB 350, which invest more in renewable energy, including wind and solar, to help curb pollution, protect our environment, and tackle climate change. She also alludes to his work championing cleaner public transit, light rail systems like the Foothill Gold Line Extension, and projects that ease traffic congestion to reduce pollution from cars and improve air quality in our local communities.
“He’s long pushed for a California free from discrimination, where everyone is equal in the eyes of the law.”
–Scott Dressler, a Legal Administrator, and David Guillermo Ramirez, a Flight Attendant, have been together for years. In the ad they talk about Senator Hernandez’ record of pushing for full, unequivocal quality for all Californians. Senator Hernandez has backed marriage rights, equal housing rights, and has voted for the strongest wage equity laws in this nation to ensure wages are not determined or impacted by race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. He’s also worked to combat any form of discrimination or bullying against all Californians.
“As a public school teacher, I see fear in the eyes of my students that their parents will be deported. Senator Hernandez is fighting for immigrant rights so that my students don’t have to live in fear.”
–Katarina Gomez, a local classroom teacher, notes that some of her students are children to undocumented immigrants, and points to Senator Hernandez’ work advancing pro-immigrant rights laws. In the State Legislature, Senator Hernandez voted to back the California DREAM Act, driver’s licenses for undocumented individuals, healthcare for undocumented children and more.
“Ed Hernandez has taken on skyrocketing tuition costs, worked to make California’s universities more accountable, and he’s backed college affordability programs so that people like me can graduate from UCLA.”
–Jacqueline Yago, a student at UCLA, discusses Senator Hernandez’ record of pushing for increased access and affordability to California’s world-class higher education system, while seriously questioning the UC System’s pattern of unsustainable tuition hikes when already under fire for unsound budgetary practices.
“Far too often, a good paying job can be hard to come by for returning veterans. Ed Hernandez understands this. It’s why he worked to expand educational and job-training programs to give veterans a fair shot at reaching the middle class.”
–Michelle Feng, a veteran of the U.S. Army, details Senator Hernandez’ work of supporting increased investment in services for veterans, including education and job-training programs, like AB 1509 which created the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Transition Assistance Program designed to assist returning veterans access benefits that will help them transition to civilian life.
“Ed Hernandez’ record of progress has helped shape my California story… my California story … my California story… my California story… my California story…my story…my story… and my California story.”
“Ed Hernandez for Lieutenant Governor. A real record of progress — for all of us.”
Several months back, Senator Hernandez released his first digital video, titled “A California Story,” which can be viewed by clicking on the screen image below:
A husband, father, grandfather, practicing optometrist, and local businessman, “Dr. Ed” (as he is known to his patients) has spent his life bringing quality eye care to predominantly low-income communities. As a health care provider, the need to improve access to health care for all Californians is what first drove him to run for office.
Since being elected to the Assembly in 2006 and the Senate in 2010, Dr. Ed Hernandez has been a leader on the implementation of federal health care reform – helping expand access to affordable health care, control costs, and improve the network of providers so people can actually get quality care when they need it. Dr. Ed has been a champion by expanding educational opportunity to qualified students overlooked by our public schools and universities, as well as a major proponent for government reform, including fixing a broken initiative system too often hijacked by billionaires and wealthy corporations. Dr. Ed Hernandez is running to take this experience, leadership, and vision to the next level by serving the people of California as their Lieutenant Governor.
