It was 127 degrees in Death Valley this week. Planes were grounded in Phoenix because it was literally too hot for them to fly. Wildfires burn across the land.
Massive heat waves are deadly. And yet we have a President in the White House making decisions that turn back the clock on protections for air and water and acting as though climate change is something to be ignored.
California’s next governor needs to be an international leader for our planet and our people.
I have been an environmental warrior my entire life. As a first term Assemblywoman, working with a Republican governor, I authored the largest landfill clean up bill in California’s history, creating a fund of $100 million to clean up our landfills. The fund was created by a tipping fee on garbage, so it had the added benefit of also promoting recycling as waste haulers tried to limit the amount of garbage they dumped. I have the legislative and executive record to get things done.
As governor, I will ensure California leads the world, not just in fighting climate change, but also in innovative solutions. Solutions like those currently being tested in Los Angeles, to mitigate the impact of these heat waves on our cities, which are often several degrees warmer due to asphalt streets, parking lots and the lack of shade trees.
Today is supposed to be the hottest day of this heat wave. Please stay cool and hydrated, and look out for your neighbors, particularly the elderly living alone.

Friend –
We are living in extraordinary times. The challenges before us are monumental and the stakes have never been higher in my lifetime.
The people of this great state reject the Trump Administration’s politics of division and we refuse to be dragged into the past – we’ve proved this time and time again at the polls and through our policies.
That’s why we’re making an unprecedented investment in our kids and our future.
California’s 2017-18 Budget prioritizes public education like never before, raising per pupil spending to just over $11,000.
For the sixth straight year, California Democrats have delivered the highest level of funding for our communities and schools that need it most. All told, we added a historic $74.5 BILLION to our K-14 education programs while empowering local officials to spend it as they see fit.
Our budget is a reflection of our values and our priorities – and when it comes to our children, I wanted you to know I’m working for them. This budget puts kids first. Thank you for helping us deliver a historic win and a brighter future for the next generation of Californians.

Jacobson & Zilber Strategies ED HERNANDEZ NOTCHES ANOTHER WIN, GETS HEFTY BACKING FROM LABOR POWERHOUSE State Building & Construction Trades Council of California Endorses State Senator Ed Hernandez in Bid for Lt. Governor
WEST COVINA, CA- Continuing his cascade of support from working families, today State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez was endorsed by the State Building & Construction Trades Council of California in his campaign for California Lieutenant Governor.
Upon making public their support of Senator Hernandez’ Lt. Governor campaign, President of the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, Robbie Hunter, released the following statement:
“State Sen. Ed Hernandez’s long career promoting health and education, and his demonstrated concern for working families makes him a terrific candidate for Lieutenant Governor, for which the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California endorses him.
“Sen. Hernandez will make a great Lieutenant Governor. As a Senator, he has proven to balance the needs of all Californians, especially working families. He has demonstrated his policy expertise on education issues dealing with the University of California and the California State University System. His environmental record more than qualifies him to sit on the State Lands Commission, a key responsibility for the Lieutenant Governor. The Lieutenant Governor has a unique role in making sure that the voice of all Californians is represented at these institutions. We feel that the construction industry, especially the building trades members, will be well served with Ed Hernandez as Lieutenant Governor.”

A husband, father, grandfather, practicing optometrist, and local businessman, “Dr. Ed” (as he is known to his patients) has spent his life bringing quality eye care to predominantly low-income communities. As a health care provider, the need to improve access to health care for all Californians is what first drove him to run for office.
Since being elected to the Assembly in 2006 and the Senate in 2010, Dr. Ed Hernandez has been a leader on the implementation of federal health care reform – helping expand access to affordable health care, control costs, and improve the network of providers so people can actually get quality care when they need it. Dr. Ed has been a champion by expanding educational opportunity to qualified students overlooked by our public schools and universities, as well as a major proponent for government reform, including fixing a broken initiative system too often hijacked by billionaires and wealthy corporations. Dr. Ed Hernandez is running to take this experience, leadership, and vision to the next level by serving the people of California as their Lieutenant Governor.
LARA CONTINUES TO BE THE CHOICE OF WORKING FAMILIES FOR INSURANCE COMMISSIONER Endorsement from the State Building & Construction Trades Council of California Bolsters Ricardo Lara’s Statewide Effort
LONG BEACH, CA– In another demonstration of his expansive support among organizations in the labor movement, today State Senator Ricardo Lara picked up a milestone endorsement from the State Building & Construction Trades Council of California in his campaign for California State Insurance Commissioner.
In announcing their endorsement of Senator Lara’s statewide effort, Robbie Hunter, President of the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California wrote:
“A passionate friend of labor for nearly seven years in elective office, State Sen. Ricardo Lara has earned the endorsement of the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California in his campaign for State Insurance Commissioner.
“Ricardo Lara has a long history of understanding working families, on issues like health insurance, auto insurance, and home insurance. He will fight against things like redlining, where you might not be able to get coverage if you live in a zip code that some insurance companies don’t like. He will give California a fair-level, comprehensive insurance system, where if you pay for it, you should get insurance. Few legislative leaders have a personal story that is as compelling as Lara’s… He’ll be streamlined and efficient. But at the same time, he will deliver to the taxpayer, the resident, the family, what it is that they are paying for.”
Today’s announcement follows the release of the Senator’s new digital video ad, titled, “Embolden,” which takes aim at Donald Trump’s backwards agenda and the President’s comments saying that “California is out of control,” by illustrating the sharp contrast between the Oval Office’s agenda and that of Lara’s.

I’ve always been proud to be a Californian, but the fact that nearly 1 out of every 4 children in our state is living in poverty is unacceptable It is time to acknowledge that something is profoundly wrong when it comes to caring for the youngest among us. It is time to change course.
In 2015, 47.2% of children in the state were poor or near poor while 21.2% of children in California lived in families without enough resources to make ends meet.
I am running for Governor because I am on fire to make the changes necessary to lift Californians out of poverty. Help make a difference and give children a voice by supporting my campaign and contributing $29.20 right now. We must change course because our children cannot wait.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Delaine
