RICARDO LARA EXPANDS LABOR SUPPORT ACROSS CALIFORNIA IN BID FOR INSURANCE COMMISSIONER

AFT Local 1521 Joins Broad Coalition of Working Families and Education Labor Unions Backing Senator Lara’s Statewide Campaign

LONG BEACH, CA — Demonstrating his expansive appeal to organizations that represent working men and women in his campaign for California Insurance Commissioner, today State Senator Ricardo Lara was endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 1521.

In a reflection of Senator Lara’s wide-spread support from education-related labor organizations, AFT Local 1521 joins the California Teachers Association, California Federation of Teachers, California Faculty Association, and the California School Employees Association in endorsing Lara for Insurance Commissioner.

In a statement released following the endorsement becoming public, Senator Lara remarked:

“It is a tremendous honor to have this powerful endorsement from the LA Community College Faculty Guild, AFT Local 1521, an organization that fights on behalf of thousands of community college faculty members. We share not only a commitment to ensuring that faculty members are properly paid, but also to making higher education more affordable and accessible, which is why I supported eliminating one year of tuition costs for California students.”

“Their confidence in my campaign is very encouraging and underscores the robust momentum our campaign has going into the California Democratic Convention. I look forward to continuing our effort to improve the quality of our state’s esteemed community colleges and make them affordable and accessible for every Californian.”

He’s walked in our shoes

SEIU + Kevin

SEIU California recently endorsed Kevin’s bold vision for progress and his campaign for U.S. Senate, and I wanted to share a bit about why:

When it comes to the most challenging issues facing California, Kevin is our champion.

He led the fight for a $15 minimum wage, and carried it across the finish line.

He fought for economic justice against employers skimming money out of their workers’ paychecks, authoring and passing legislation that cracked down on wage theft.

He has a proven record of ensuring that all Californians — regardless of their zip code — benefit from policies that clean our air and our water; correcting injustices in our state’s approach to fighting climate change and protecting our environment.

And he fought valiantly to protect our friends and families when the Trump Administration moved to openly attack immigrant communities.

Simply put, Kevin has stood with us and our California values his entire career, and we’re so proud to endorse his campaign to be our next U.S. Senator.

In addition to his legislative accomplishments, Kevin has spent a lot of time with SEIU California members, and spent a day walking in our shoes. He heard our concerns over growing inequities in our state, and we heard his commitment to stand with us to fight injustice. It’s clear that he shares our dreams.

Even in these troubling times, it’s critical that we stand together, embrace our diversity, grow our economy, and promote equal opportunity for all. It’s critical that we continue this fight to grow our California dream in America.

That’s why I’m asking you to stand with us and endorse Kevin’s run for U.S. Senate.

Thank You,

Alma Hernandez

Earning your vote at Convention

Dear Fellow Democrat,

I am running for Lt. Governor to fight for a better, stronger California. The California Democratic Party Convention is just a few days away and I hope to earn your support.

Please watch and share our new campaign video.

As a first-generation American, and first in my family to graduate college, my family’s story is California’s story. My grandmother in Greece never learned to read or write. She let my father come to America alone, with no money, to be a farmworker outside of Lodi. He worked his way through Sacramento State University on a waiter’s salary, married my mother who was a school teacher, and together they taught me the values of hard work, education, and determination.

We must keep the pathway of the American Dream open and alive by:

  • Fighting to bring down the soaring costs of the UCs, CSUs, and our community colleges.
  • Creating and delivering affordable housing for middle class families.
  • Ensuring that Californians have access to affordable, single-payer healthcare.
  • Safeguarding our endangered coast, fighting climate change, and standing up to Big Oil.
  • Standing up for DREAMers and our immigrant brothers and sisters, a woman’s right to choose, marriage equality, and equal rights for all.
  • Protecting women in the workplace.

I am a proud mother of two teenage boys, a lifelong Democrat, and a former CDP delegate. I am proud to have served President Obama as Ambassador to Hungary, to have served on the First 5 Commission for early childhood education, and to currently chair Governor Brown’s California International Trade and Investment Advisory Council.

I am the only candidate to have visited all 58 California counties and have had the pleasure of meeting many of you in person and listening to your stories along the way.

I earned the endorsements of Senator Kamala Harris, Equality California, EMILY’s List, the California Federation of Teachers, the Northern California Carpenters, and the California State University Employees Union – SEIU Local 2579, along with so many other Democratic leaders, activists, and organizations.

As the first woman elected Lt. Governor in California history, I will stand side-by-side with you to fight back against Trump, protect our California values, and ensure that we safeguard our democracy for future generations of Californians and all Americans.

I would be honored to have your support!

Eleni Kounalakis

P.S. Please join us at our hospitality suite on Friday at 10:15pm, Room 30ABC, as we celebrate women who dare to run for elected office. See you in San Diego!
