ED HERNANDEZ MAINTAINS EDGE, WINS NEW ENDORSEMENT IN LT. GOVERNOR’S RACE
U.S. Congress Member Alan Lowenthal Backs Senator Ed Hernandez in Statewide Contest
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA — Consolidating more pivotal support in the race for California Lieutenant Governor, today State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez picked up a coveted endorsement from United States Congress Member Alan Lowenthal.
Prior to being elected to the United States House of Representatives for California’s 47th District, Congress Member Lowenthal served in the California State Legislature and on the Long Beach City Council. In making public his endorsement of Senator Hernandez’s statewide bid, Congress Member Lowenthal remarked:
“Having served in the state legislature with Ed Hernandez, I can attest to his deep commitment to fighting for the working families of California. Significantly, recently California Governor Jerry Brown signed Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez’ groundbreaking drug transparency bill, SB-17, into law. Senator Hernandez’ latest digital video ad, titled, “Life or Death,” features a moving testimonial from Kendall Renee, who is allergic to more than 95% of foods and carries at least four EpiPens with her at all times. Renee highlights Senator Hernandez’ efforts to combat skyrocketing drug costs in the ad.
A husband, father, grandfather, practicing optometrist, and local businessman, “Dr. Ed” (as he is known to his patients) has spent his life bringing quality eye care to predominantly low-income communities. As a health care provider, the need to improve access to health care for all Californians is what first drove him to run for office.
Since being elected to the Assembly in 2006 and the Senate in 2010, Dr. Ed Hernandez has been a leader on the implementation of federal health care reform – helping expand access to affordable health care, control costs, and improve the network of providers so people can actually get quality care when they need it. Dr. Ed has been a champion by expanding educational opportunity to qualified students overlooked by our public schools and universities, as well as a major proponent for government reform, including fixing a broken initiative system too often hijacked by billionaires and wealthy corporations. Dr. Ed Hernandez is running to take this experience, leadership, and vision to the next level by serving the people of California as their Lieutenant Governor.
When I was Chairman of the California Democratic Party, we worked together in 1992 to turn California from red to blue – carrying our state for Bill Clinton, the first Democratic presidential victory in California in 28 years; electing Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein to the U.S. Senate, the first time any state elected two women senators; and increasing our congressional and state legislative margins.
Eleni Kounalakis was on the front lines of that historic victory as a young CDP staff member, organizing voters at the grassroots level throughout the state. And, over the last 26 years, she’s never stopping fighting for progressive Democratic candidates and the values we share.
Now Eleni is running for Lieutenant Governor and I’m all in for her. Los Angeles County Police Chiefs’ Association Say, “Senator Hernandez has proven himself an ally of law enforcement and public safety”
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA — Kicking off the week with a fresh boost of momentum, today State Senator Ed Hernandez won a forceful endorsement from the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs’ Association in his campaign for Lieutenant Governor of California. This announcement follows news that last week the Los Angeles Police Protective League endorsed the Senator’s statewide run. Previously he was backed PORAC, the Peace Officers Research Association of California, the largest state law enforcement association in the nation.

The only way we’ll be able to stop tragic mass shootings like the one in Parkland, Florida earlier this week, is by electing leaders who aren’t afraid to take on the NRA and fight for comprehensive gun reform.
We have the highest youth violence rate in the developed world for one sad reason only — the lack of courage by our leaders to adopt sensible policies that work everywhere else.
When I think about the 2018 elections and the people Californians will be electing to statewide office for the next four years (many of whom will ultimately serve in these positions for eight years), it’s clear to me that we need leaders who will stand up and fight, and not be afraid to upset powerful special interest groups or even other leaders in their own political party.
Dave Jones is just that kind of leader and he has proven it to us time and time again.
As Insurance Commissioner, Dave Jones has required all health insurers to cover abortion services as an Essential Health Benefit – he may be the only state Insurance Commissioner in the country to have done so. And his leadership on this issue helped put pressure on the Governor’s Administration to ultimately do the same.
As Insurance Commissioner, Dave has strictly enforced California’s law relating to contraceptive coverage. He’s required insurers to change their drug formularies and improve their coverage for consumers.
Dave wrote the law that made it illegal for health insurers to charge women more than men for health insurance coverage.
And when the bill to require health insurers to cover maternity care was stuck in the respective Appropriations Committees in each house, he helped craft the amendments that made it possible for those bills to move forward and become law – before the ACA required maternity coverage.
He is also the only candidate for Attorney General to support the passage of AB 779 to prevent fake clinics from providing false medical information to women and misleading us about our health care options, including abortion before it became state law.
He is always willing to get involved early on, stick his neck out and help make change actually happen.
Dave was the only statewide elected official to actively campaign for California to do the Medi-Cal expansion that has resulted in millions of additional Californians gaining health coverage. And he was the first statewide elected official to formally support SB 562 – the single payer bill.
California NOW has supported single payer health care for decades and has been participating in the Healthy California Coalition effort to pass SB 562. Not every organization that has taken a position in this race shares our commitment to making single payer a reality in California. Dave Jones is the only candidate for Attorney General who was on record supporting SB 562, as it was going through the legislative process last year.
