Your CDP Weekly Update

10.19.18

It’s been another productive week for Your CDP Team. See below for a recap of this week’s activities.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BETTY YEE!!!

Our warmest birthday wishes to State Controller Betty Yee! We hope she’s having a wonderful day, and we want to take this opportunity to say California is damn lucky to have a State Controller with an activist’s heart, a Nobel laureate mind, and the progressive spirit of Eleanor Roosevelt, Shirley Chisolm and Leslie Knope.

Volunteers Needed to Promote & Protect the Vote

S-O-S! Calling All Cars! All Hands On Deck! The CDP needs volunteers for our Promote & Protect the Vote program. This is a critical part of building the Big Blue Wave.
Promote & Protect the Vote is our safeguard against Republican voter suppression and vote tampering. Lawyers can earn CLE credits.
For more information, please visit the P2TV webpage. To volunteer for the CDP’s voter protection effort, please e-mail Kasey in the CDP’s Political Department.

Rocking the Vote with Live Nation

Throughout this week, Your CDP Team was proud to partner with Live Nation and register voters at one of Sacramento’s premier music venues (Ace of Spades – check it out sometime, the staff was extraordinarily courteous and supportive!) for a series of concerts. We were, of course, scrupulous about helping anyone to register regardless of Party, and we welcomed the chance to engage voters, build awareness for the Election and show Democrats in the community, doing the person-to-person work that will create the Big Blue Wave!
A huge thanks to Live Nation for inviting us to participate and talk to thousands of voters.

Counting Down the 20 Most Important Reasons to Vote

CDP’s Tina McKinnor Honored by LAAAWPPI

Last Friday, CDP Operations Director Tina McKinnor was honored by the Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute as one of their Women of Action. It was a wonderful evening celebrating some of the strong Black Women who have graduated from this prestigious program. Congratulations Tina!

18 Days Until the Election!

20 days to stop Trump’s agenda

We can take back Congress, but only if we come together now.

As of this morning, we are just 20 days out from Election Day.

That means we have less than three weeks to power the Big Blue Wave and wash Trump’s California Congressional Clones out of office to turn Congress blue.

But to stop Donald Trump’s hateful agenda and take back the House, we need your support to get out the vote in the final, crucial weeks of this election.

Can you chip in $20.18 or more right now, so we can turn out critical voters and power the Big Blue Wave on Election Day?

Since Trump was first elected, California Democrats have led the resistance to his attacks on our communities and our values.

Trump — and his enablers in Congress — have kidnapped and imprisoned children, fought to strip healthcare from Californians with pre-existing conditions, and raised taxes on middle-class and working families to give massive handouts to the rich. Just this week, he defended Saudi Arabia’s dictatorship, even in the face of their likely murder of a journalist.

On Election Day, we finally have the opportunity to stop Trump’s agenda in its tracks, by replacing his Congressional Clones in California with Democrats who will fight for progress and our California values. But only if we come together now.

Let’s get this done. Chip in $20.18 or more right now, so we can take back the House for Democrats.

Thanks for being a California Democrat.

Democratically Yours,

Eric C. Bauman, Chair
California Democratic Party

Big Blue Beacon Contest!

As we enter the home stretch of the campaign, we know how hard Grassroots Democrats are working to create the Big Blue Wave. And to make sure these last four-plus weeks of the campaign are as fun, exciting and successful we’re excited to launch the Big Blue Beacon of Hope Contest!
This will be a fun competition to make the most phone calls on key races, and we’re excited to say we have some very exciting prizes… Individual callers can win a chance to attend a basketball game with Mayor Eric Garcetti and the (once and future World Champion) Los Angeles Lakers! Check out the details here

Episode 3 of the Podcast is Live!

Episode 1 of our podcast featured an insightful and engaging discussion with one of the phenomenal Democratic women running to claim Republican-held districts – Christy Smith! Episode 2 featured President Obama’s rally in Orange County.
For Episode 3, we’re changing it up with a behind-the-scenes look at the CDP Campaign effort with the CDP’s campaign team – featuring CDP Senior Strategist Sandra Lowe, CDP Political Director Clark Lee, Coordinated Campaign Director Arianna Jimenez and Congressional Campaign Director Robert Dempsey.

Executive Board Update

The CDP Room Block for the November Executive Board at the Westin Long Beach has been sold out. The Hotel still has rooms available at Market Rate ($239 per night plust tax). Additional Union hotels can be found here
As many Democratic activists are aware, workers at several Westin properties have announced a strike. As Democrats, we are proud to stand with them in their demands for fair wages and safe working conditions. CDP Chair Bauman has been in regular contact with the leadership at UNITE-HERE Local 11, the union representing the workers at the Westin Long Beach, and they have assured us that the workers there are looking forward to welcoming CDP Executive Board members at our November Executive Board.
We are proud to stand in solidarity with the striking workers across the nation. And we heartily encourage our Executive Board members tip the Union workers at Westin Long Beach even more generously than usual.

Governor Gray Davis

15 years ago last Sunday, Governor Gray Davis got a pretty raw deal. The voters were angry over the latest round in California’s formerly gridlocked and chaotic budget process. The Republicans – led by the odious and cowardly Darrel Issa – demonstrated their utter contempt for democracy by staging a phony recall. The combination of Republican lies and Schwarzenegger’s star power was just a little too much to overcome, and October 7, 2003, the recall passed with a modest 52 percent of the vote.
But here’s the thing: Gray Davis was a damn fine Governor. He massively expanded education funding, he worked with Hillary Clinton to establish the Children’s Health Insurance Program that covered millions of California kids, he passed some of the most forward thinking and progressive LGBT rights laws in America, and he signed gun safety laws that have saved thousands of lives in the two decades since he was elected in 1998.
We’ll certainly admit… he definitely wasn’t Governor Feely McFeelington. But he led a Democratic resurgence in California politics and policy that continues to this day, and many of the most successful Democratic Party leaders in California, including CDP Chair Eric C. Bauman, were part of that historic 1998 campaign. And California was made better by Gray Davis’ tenure as Governor.
Naturally, all of our attention is focused on Gavin Newsom’s campaign to succeed Governor Brown, and build on these tremendously successful eight years. But we would be remiss if we didn’t take this moment to thank the Governor who shattered a 16 year losing streak for Democrats, and set the stage for our continued success in California elections.
Thanks chief!

24 Days until the Election. (whew – deep breaths).

It’s go time

In just 25 days, California Democrats will head to the polls.

It’s go time in our work to power the Big Blue Wave and take back the House.

In just 25 days, California Democrats will head to the polls to throw out Trump’s Congressional Clones and take back the House, so Congress can once again fight for our California values.

But before then, we’ve got work to do. To keep up the fight and win, we need grassroots supporters like you to keep up your support.

Can you chip in $20.18 or more right now towards our work to power the Big Blue Wave and take back Congress?

Right now, we have 80 organizers spread across every Republican-held congressional district in the state, and I promise you they are working overtime to turn these seats blue.

But to turn out the necessary votes on November 6, we have to make sure these organizers — and our incredible volunteers — have the resources they’ll need. That means money for clipboards, printer toner (for walk packets), lots and lots of coffee, and more.

It’s crucial we come together as California Democrats by each chipping in what we can, so we have the resources necessary to declare victory this November.

Chip in $20.18 or more right now, so we can power the Big Blue Wave and take back Congress.

Democratically Yours,

Press Release: National Coming Out Day

For Immediate Release: Thursday, October 11, 2018
Contact: John Vigna, 916.212.0357

Statement of CDP Chair Eric C. Bauman on National Coming Out Day 2018

Los Angeles– The following is a statement from Eric C. Bauman, the first openly gay Chair of the California Democratic Party:

On behalf of California Democrats, I celebrate each person who takes the opportunity of National Coming Out day to break the silence and stigma of the closet, and to fulfill their unique and cherished place as members of the LGBTQ community and as a full member of our beautiful and diverse state.

California Democrats fight every day to create equality for members of the LGBTQ community and to create a state where every person can live their truth openly and proudly.

From history makers like Harvey Milk to todays generation of groundbreaking leaders, California Democrats are unwavering in our commitment to ensure LGBTQ people are welcomed and embraced at everywhere — in school classrooms and playgrounds, on college campuses, in the workplace, in healthcare, and in our golden years.

Celebrating marriage with my partner, Michael, was the fulfillment of our lifelong dream.  I am personally committed to ensuring that every gay person has the opportunity to fulfill their dreams – and today, this especially means ensuring equality and the safety of members of the transgender community.

And I promise this California Democrats will take every opportunity to fight the hateful, divisive and backward anti-LGBT agenda of the Trump Administration, because we have never been more energized in the fight for civil rights than we are today.

For every person considering coming out today, tomorrow, or the next day know that your courage makes it possible for others to do the same.  And know that your vote matters, is valued by the Democratic Party, and is essential to creating the Blue Wave that will move us forward and allow us to #TakeItBack this November.
