Why is his message so enthusiastically received by the Delegates, Central Committees, Club members, Voters and Donors?

 
A couple days ago,  I wrapped up the forth (or was it the fifth?) trip around the State to meet and greet as many of you as I could.  I spent some time visiting in Northern California, the Central Valley, and the Southern part of the State.  The best part of the trip was seeing how many of you knew me from the Progressive Caucus and how many of you felt the same as I do about the need to start cleaning out the dark money from the party.

On the Road.  What is it about Mike?

Mike has been traveling around the state and speaking to as many delegates, Central Committees and Clubs as he can get to. The one thing these events have in common is that his message is well received.  Mike’s platform and ideas strike a chord with almost every CDP delegate.  He has never gotten through the whole speech in the 2 minutes but has gotten the whole thing out with some Q&A.  You are bound to have questions send him an email at: MikeForController@Thallers.com

Mike’s Stump Speech, platform, ideas, and ideals

I’m Mike Thaller, Chair of the Progressive Caucus and I am running for CDP Controller.

What do you love about the party and why do we all do this?   I think it is that we get a say in what and who the party supports.  For example…

  • How many of you are anti-fracking (show of hands.) OK How about…
  • How many of you are in favor of SB562, the Bill that, in my opinion, is what ObamaCare should have been. It is basically “Medicare for All” and takes the Insurance Industry profits out of the picture. (Hold up SB562 “Healthcare is a Human Right” poster and show of hands.)

As a Caucus Chair and as CDP Controller my concerns are the influence of “Dark Money” AND the lack of influence by us; the Central Committees, Caucuses, Delegates, and the voters when “Dark Money” comes in on an issue.  For example…

  • A couple years ago an oil company “donated” thousands to the Party and then the Party was neutral on the endorsement of an anti-fracking bill.
  • Can you imagine how much the insurance industry will “donate” to keep SB-562 from passing!?

I might ruffle some feathers by saying this, but sometimes it seems like the party is controlled much more by the big industry lobbyists than by us and even the legislators.

We have to have money to exist, so we can’t cut it off “Cold Turkey,” but as Controller I will start weaning the party off of Dark Money and on to those who believe in us and our ideals. I believe that when our voters and donors see that the process has started, they will come back and donate to the party again and vote for our candidates and favored propositions.

There is a question no one asks me.  “Are you qualified to be CDP Controller?”  Well, I was Controller for a film and video production company and again for an on-line educational materials company.  I am the treasurer of two Federal PACs and was treasurer of a state PAC and as many as three Democratic clubs at the same time.  As Chair of the Progressive Caucus and co-founder and spokesman for the “Caucus of Caucuses” my connections are with the people of the Democratic Party.  And…

A related question that I am not asked is, “Just what does the CDP Controller do?”  I’ll go into more detail later, but, the Controller is not the fundraiser for “big ticket” donors, but drives fundraising by potentially hiring fundraisers for the party who then work for a commission.  I will raise money based on the principles of what and who we believe in and I’ll do that without making a profit for myself.

I will also ask the delegates, causes, central committees, and Democratic legislators just how we should spend that money with an emphasis on new ideas.

Earlier this month, the Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) held a debate between Kimberly Ellis and Eric Bauman.  The debate was quite revealing.  If you would like to hear it, or hear it again, you can do so by CLICKING HERE.

PDA is a national organization founded by Tim Carpenter a CDP delegate, when he was still living in Orange County. Tim passed away three years ago this week.  As ill as he was, he was hard at work on Progressive causes and convincing Bernie Sanders to run for President to the end.  …What an inspiration.

PDA focuses on national campaigns and issues, but these issues are also of prime concern to Californians.  PDA is not affiliated with the Democratic Party.  We urge you to learn more about PDA at www.PDAmerica.org and consider joining like I did ten years or so ago.  There is no cost to join, but donations, no doubt, are always welcome. 🙂

The debate was a little different.  PDA does not have “a dog in this hunt,” so this debate was strictly to educate those of us who will be voting.  Approximately 400 of the 3,300 CDP delegates are PDA members, including the two PDA California State Coordinators who organized it for the benefit of those 400.  BUT, our email list is only a fraction of the CDP delegates, so if you know anyone who may not receive this, please FORWARD it to them.  (Please use the link rather than forwarding this email, so they don’t accidentally unsubscribe you.) In recent weeks, Senator Lara, who recently co-introduced Californians for a Healthy California Act (SB 562), which amounts to single-payer healthcare for the state, announced that he is running to serve as California’s State Insurance Commissioner – a statewide elected office dedicated to protecting consumers, enforcing all insurance regulations, and safeguarding Californians’ economic and health security.
Dubbed by the Los Angeles Times as the “Point man in the push for immigrant rights,” Senator Lara, who also previously served as Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus and currently serves as Vice Chair of the California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Caucus, announced his candidacy by previously releasing the following statement:

“Our nation is in full blown crisis mode right now. We have a man in the White House with no popular mandate, who is methodically working to strip Americans of their healthcare, their economic security and their civil liberties.

“I’m running to be California’s next State Insurance Commissioner because I believe at my core that California needs a strong defender, and a counterpuncher, who will stand up to fight our bullying President, Donald Trump, and his increasingly reckless federal government on issues from healthcare access to economic security and more. If millions of Californians begin losing their health insurance because of actions taken by Donald Trump, I will be there to fight him tooth and nail at every pass.

“As California’s Insurance Commissioner, I’ll work tirelessly to represent the great people of California, not the corporations, the billionaire class, the pharmaceutical or the insurance companies. I plan to work with anybody who is willing to come to the table, but my allegiance will always be first and foremost to the consumers, the patients, our working families, and our most vulnerable communities in our Golden State.”

As a State Senator, Ricardo Lara has already been a leader on numerous issues that the office of the Insurance Commissioner interacts with. As stated above, he recently co-introduced a single-payer healthcare system for the state, and also spearheaded the groundbreaking law that provided health care for 170,000 immigrant children, and has played a strong, dynamic role in shaping, implementing and expanding Covered California.

In 2016, Senator Lara engineered the successful statewide campaign to allow for multi-lingual education in California’s schools. He was also one of the key leaders behind a landmark effort to grant driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants in California. This legislation is more important than ever, now that Donald Trump has instructed border patrol agents that they may deport undocumented immigrants for the “crime” of driving without a license.

Senator Lara was born and raised in East Los Angeles and attended schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.  He graduated from San Diego State University with a double major in Journalism and Spanish. He worked as a legislative staffer for years, including working for State Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez and for then-Assemblymember and now State Senate President pro Tem Kevin de Léon. In 2010, Senator Lara was elected to the California State Assembly, and in 2012, he was elected to the California State Senate, where he made history as the first openly gay person of color in the State Senate.

His 33rd Senate District is expansive, encompassing nearly one million people, roughly 70% of which is Latino. The district is located in the heart of the South Bay and stretches from Long Beach to Lynwood, and from Huntington Park to Lakewood and Los Angeles.

Significantly, if elected, Senator Lara would be the first openly gay statewide elected official in California. Today, Senator Lara serves as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee of the California State Senate, considered to be perhaps the most influential committee in the California State Senate.

Eric Bauman has been a champion of universal healthcare his entire career. As an emergency room nurse, Eric understands that everyone’s health is fragile and that we all need high quality, affordable healthcare. That’s why universal healthcare champions such as U.S. Rep. John Garamendi, State Senator Ricardo Lara, former Senator and Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, former Senator Mark Leno, and Dr. Paul Song all support his candidacy.

 

Eric is a champion of labor. He has walked the picket line and fought unjust employers as a union member and as a Democratic leader. He helped organize his nurse colleagues at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and at Providence Tarzana Medical Center into SEIU. That is why the California Faculty Association, the California College Democrats, and the California Young Democrats have all endorsed his candidacy.

 

As leader of the LGBTQ community, Eric headed L.A.’s Stonewall Democratic Club for much of the 1990s, helped found what became the National Stonewall Democrats, and campaigned tirelessly against Proposition 8. And, he is still fighting for his community and for all Californians to enjoy equal rights.

 

Eric started as a grassroots organizer to the State Party’s Vice Chair. As Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party, Eric has helped it grow into a dominant force in state politics, holding every statewide elected office and a two-thirds super-majority in both houses of the Legislature. He has also chaired the Los Angeles County Democratic Party for 16 years, transforming it into a national-award-winning political powerhouse whose annual budget has grown from $50,000 at the start of his tenure to $1.7 million today.

Why Real Choice Matters

Let’s be clear: there is no middle ground when it comes to legislating a woman’s right to choose. We either respect a woman’s reproductive freedom in our laws or we don’t.

The issue is not how many seats we hold, it’s about who holds them and their values. It’s about building the bench. If we don’t elect progressive, pro-choice candidates at the local level, there is literally no qualified candidate to run for higher office when the time comes. And let’s remind ourselves that even here in big, blue California, the majority of our local seats are held by Republicans.

Today, many Democrats face a difficult quandary in our red and purple districts: back an anti-choice Democrat, alienate women and ditch our core values or leave the field to the Republicans. It’s time we create another option. It’s time we build the bench.

We, as a Party, are solely responsible for this quagmire. It’s time for us to stop pointing fingers at each other, and instead look in the mirror and ask, “What have we personally done to help build the bench of pro-choice candidates in local office?” If the answer is don’t know, can’t remember or nothing; well, let’s stop talking about it; let’s be about it.

I’m running to be the Chair of the California Democratic Party. You have a right to know where I stand on this issue. So let me be crystal clear: if a candidate doesn’t support a woman’s right to choose, they shouldn’t expect to be supported. Period.

My seven step plan addresses how we are going to solve this gap in qualified, pro-choice local candidates here in California’s red and purple districts. No, it won’t happen overnight – it will take time.

But I can assure you, if there isn’t a pipeline of pro-choice candidates in these opposition held Californian districts in the future, you can point that finger in my direction because, the buck stops here.
