OAKLAND, Calif. (May 3, 2017): Kimberly Ellis’ campaign for California Democratic Party (CDP) Chair gained the support of two progressive champions, Senate Budget and Finance Chair Holly Mitchell and Assembly Public Safety Budget Subcommittee Chair Dr. Shirley Nash Weber.

“We have an opportunity to elect a strong and inspirational Black woman who is eminently qualified to lead the California Democratic Party into the 21st Century. As a Party, it’s time for us to do some tough soul searching around our innate bias in what leadership looks and sounds like,” said Sen. Mitchell. “Instead of recoiling from the subtle cuts and double standard, Kimberly has facilitated difficult conversations and told hard truths around race and gender and shown grace under pressure — proving she’s got the grit to lead.”

Senator Mitchell chairs the Committee on Budget and Fiscal Review, and serves on the Senate’s Health, Insurance, Labor and Employment, Public Safety Committees and on the Joint Committee on Rules. She also founded the Senate Select Committee on Women and Inequality, and belongs to both the Black and Women’s Caucuses.

“As a professional organizer, working parent, woman and person of color, Kimberly provides a perspective that’s desperately needed in our next Party Chair,” said Dr. Shirley Weber. “Making room for qualified, new voices means that we must choose the new over the known, understanding that inclusion is a conscientious choice, not a passive passage of time. It’s time for us to move beyond the rhetoric of inclusion; it’s time we choose Kimberly as the next CDP Chair.”

Dr. Weber chairs the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Public Safety. She also serves as a member of the Assembly Standing Committee on Education, Higher Education, Elections, Budget and Banking and Finance.

“These remarkable women represent the very best of progressive voices and I am deeply honored to have their strong support,” said Ellis. “Everyday, leaders in our Capitol are hearing from delegates about where they want this Party to go. I’m confident that when we convene later this month, we will be speaking with a unified voice about moving this Party into the future in a bigger, better, bolder direction.”

Education Leaders for Bauman Update

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Delegates —

With Trump in the White House and Betsy DeVos running the Education Department, our schools are under attack and California must lead the way.

For years I have stood with the education community to protect our kids from school vouchers, unregulated charter schools and other schemes to privatize our schools and deny our students the public education they deserve.

I am proud to have stood with the education community to pass Propositions 30 and 55 to keep our schools funded, and with the California Faculty Association for their fight for 5 — ensuring our instructors get fair compensation.

And now the education community is standing with me in my race for Chair of the California Democratic Party.

You have a big decision to make in less than three weeks.

If public education is important to you, please join the following education leaders, along with teachers, paraprofessionals, school board members, parent activists and students across the state as part of #TeamBauman:

  • Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson*
  • The California Faculty Association
  • Josh Pechthalt, President of California Federation of Teachers*
  • Alex Caputo Pearl, President of United Teachers Los Angeles*
  • Hon. Paul Fong, President of San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers*
  • California College Democrats
  • The three past presidents of the California Teachers Association*
    • Dean Vogel
    • David Sanchez
    • Barbara Kerr
  • And many more

Will you join them?

Democratically Yours,

Eric C. Bauman

Vice Chair, California Democratic Party

Chair, Los Angeles County Democratic Party

“CFA is very proud to endorse Eric Bauman for Democratic Party Chair. He is a steadfast ally of the faculty union, someone who values one of California’s greatest assets, our universities! Democrats have a great leader in Eric. The 27,000 faculty, coaches, librarians and counselors of the CSU stand in strong support of Eric Bauman.” — Jennifer Eagan, President, California Faculty Association
“Eric Bauman’s vigorous dedication to improving local neighborhood schools and protecting students and classroom teachers is unrivaled in this race. No other candidate matches his experience, skill-sets, and deep commitment to the cause of the labor movement, standing up for working families, but most importantly, ensuring that all students of all backgrounds in our state receive the best education possible. I’ve just described a few of the many reasons why I’m proud to back Eric C. Bauman for Chair of the California Democratic Party.” — Josh Pechthalt, President, California Federation of Teachers*“I’m proud to endorse Eric Bauman for Chair of the California Democratic Party. Eric has been an effective leader for Democrats across the Golden State, from working to advance progressive policies that improve our education system to being a champion for working people and much more. I know Eric will make an excellent Chair of the state Democratic Party.” — Tom Torlakson, California Superintendent of Public Instruction*

“I’m pleased to join the broad coalition of grassroots activists, labor leaders, elected officials and organizations backing Eric Bauman for Chair of the California Democratic Party. Eric has been a force, and a bold leader for grassroots Democrats across the state. He’s also been a champion for classroom teachers, students and good schools. We have worked closely with Eric to ensure the LA Unified School Board maintains a pro-teacher, pro-student majority and to defeat ‘so-called’ reforms that would undermine California’s commitment that every student is entitled to a free, high quality public education. I know he’ll make us proud as the California Democratic Party’s next Chair.” — Alex Caputo-Pearl, President, United Teachers Los Angeles*

Everyone has at least one name come to mind when asked, “Who was your favorite teacher?”
The reason: teachers play a vital role in our personal development and profoundly shape the trajectory of our lives.

Today is National Teacher Day. If we’re truly going to honor our teachers, we must have their backs when they need us. We must end the privatization and corporatization of public education because profit motives have no place in our classroom.

As we redefine what it means to be a Democrat, we cannot simply be the Party of education – we must be the Party of good, free, public education for all children, which includes collective bargaining and teacher tenure.

The California Teacher’s Association, California Federation of Teachers and many educationally-minded delegates are promoting Kids Not Profit, a resolution rejecting the subsidizing of for-profit charter school companies and reaffirming our Party’s commitment to strengthening local neighborhood public schools for all Californians.

On this National Teacher Day, I hope you’ll consider supporting this very worthy resolution.

Finally, a moment of personal privilege… I’d like to thank Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Murphy, Mr. Weidlein, and
Mr & Mrs. Perez – my favorite teachers. Like most of us, I have more than one. As this campaign comes to a close, I can say with absolute certainty, I would not be here today if not for my former teachers. I’m eternally grateful.

Democratically yours,

I have your back

Wells Fargo and Wall Street shouldn’t be able to defraud customers, and if they do, they certainly should NOT be allowed to force arbitration to secretly settle the legal disputes.  That’s why today I announced Senate Bill 33, legislation that would allow victims to sue in California state courts by allowing judges to deny petitions for binding arbitration in cases involving fraud.

As you know, Wells Fargo acknowledged that it opened more than two million checking, credit card and other illegal accounts without customer approval. This widespread misconduct dates back to at least 2002 and drained unearned fees from the accounts of clients –many of them low income, elderly or immigrants. It has also negatively affected these victims; credit scores, making borrowing more difficult and expensive.

But putting SB 33 on the law books is only part of my plan to curtail unfair business practices at many of our country’s largest banks and hold Wall Street accountable. I’ve put together a Banking Reform Task Force that includes academics, financial regulators, and consumer advocates who are charged with protecting your rights and making recommendations to policymakers around banking reform.

At a time when the White House is rolling back consumer and investor protections, California must lead in the fight against deceptive marketing, discriminatory lending, unnecessary fees, illegal kickbacks, and other abusive banking practices.

That’s why I have your back and always will.

In solidarity,

John               John Chiang for Governor 2018

Significantly, recently, Senator Hernandez released a new online video, titled  “A California Story,” which can be viewed by clicking on the screen image below:

A husband, father, grandfather, practicing optometrist, and local businessman, “Dr. Ed” (as he is known to his patients) has spent his life bringing quality eye care to predominantly low-income communities.  As a health care provider, the need to improve access to health care for all Californians is what first drove him to run for office.

Since being elected to the Assembly in 2006 and the Senate in 2010, Dr. Ed Hernandez has been a leader on the implementation of federal health care reform – helping expand access to affordable health care, control costs, and improve the network of providers so people can actually get quality care when they need it. Dr. Ed has been a champion by expanding educational opportunity to qualified students overlooked by our public schools and universities, as well as a major proponent for government reform, including fixing a broken initiative system too often hijacked by billionaires and wealthy corporations. Dr. Ed Hernandez is running to take this experience, leadership, and vision to the next level by serving the people of California as their Lieutenant Governor.

LONG BEACH, CA — Bolstering his campaign for California State Insurance Commissioner, today State Senator Ricardo Lara received a major endorsement from the California Conference of Machinists.

In announcing their support of Senator Lara’s Insurance Commissioner bid, Tom Brandon, Secretary Treasurer of California Conference of Machinists, released the following statement:

“Ricardo Lara is widely recognized as a champion for working people. He’s been a steadfast advocate of a pro-jobs, pro-worker, and pro-middle class agenda in both the State Assembly and State Senate. In recent weeks, Senator Lara, who recently co-introduced Californians for a Healthy California Act (SB 562), which amounts to single-payer healthcare for the state, announced that he is running to serve as California’s State Insurance Commissioner – a statewide elected office dedicated to protecting consumers, enforcing all insurance regulations, and safeguarding Californians’ economic and health security.
Dubbed by the Los Angeles Times as the “Point man in the push for immigrant rights,” Senator Lara, who also previously served as Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus and currently serves as Vice Chair of the California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Caucus, announced his candidacy by previously releasing the following statement:

“Our nation is in full blown crisis mode right now. We have a man in the White House with no popular mandate, who is methodically working to strip Americans of their healthcare, their economic security and their civil liberties.

“I’m running to be California’s next State Insurance Commissioner because I believe at my core that California needs a strong defender, and a counterpuncher, who will stand up to fight our bullying President, Donald Trump, and his increasingly reckless federal government on issues from healthcare access to economic security and more. If millions of Californians begin losing their health insurance because of actions taken by Donald Trump, I will be there to fight him tooth and nail at every pass.

“As California’s Insurance Commissioner, I’ll work tirelessly to represent the great people of California, not the corporations, the billionaire class, the pharmaceutical or the insurance companies. I plan to work with anybody who is willing to come to the table, but my allegiance will always be first and foremost to the consumers, the patients, our working families, and our most vulnerable communities in our Golden State.”

As a State Senator, Ricardo Lara has already been a leader on numerous issues that the office of the Insurance Commissioner interacts with. As stated above, he recently co-introduced a single-payer healthcare system for the state, and also spearheaded the groundbreaking law that provided health care for 170,000 immigrant children, and has played a strong, dynamic role in shaping, implementing and expanding Covered California.

In 2016, Senator Lara engineered the successful statewide campaign to allow for multi-lingual education in California’s schools. He was also one of the key leaders behind a landmark effort to grant driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants in California. This legislation is more important than ever, now that Donald Trump has instructed border patrol agents that they may deport undocumented immigrants for the “crime” of driving without a license.

Senator Lara was born and raised in East Los Angeles and attended schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.  He graduated from San Diego State University with a double major in Journalism and Spanish. He worked as a legislative staffer for years, including working for State Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez and for then-Assemblymember and now State Senate President pro Tem Kevin de Léon. In 2010, Senator Lara was elected to the California State Assembly, and in 2012, he was elected to the California State Senate, where he made history as the first openly gay person of color in the State Senate.

His 33rd Senate District is expansive, encompassing nearly one million people, roughly 70% of which is Latino. The district is located in the heart of the South Bay and stretches from Long Beach to Lynwood, and from Huntington Park to Lakewood and Los Angeles.

Significantly, if elected, Senator Lara would be the first openly gay statewide elected official in California. Today, Senator Lara serves as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee of the California State Senate, considered to be perhaps the most influential committee in the California State Senate.
