Last Friday, we certified the results of the June 5th Statewide Primary and here’s what we found: voter turnout is on the rise!
California saw the highest turnout for a gubernatorial primary in 20 years, with more than 7.1 million Californians casting their ballots. Compare that to 4.4 million ballots cast in the last gubernatorial primary just four years ago. That’s an increase of more than 2.6 million ballots cast!
And it’s no coincidence. California is leading the way by making voting more accessible and convenient with in-person early voting, online voter registration, automatic voter registration, same day registration, expanded vote-by-mail, and, in the Voters Choice Act counties, the flexibility to vote at any vote center in the county over the course of 11 days.
But with the future of voting rights, labor rights, health care, civil rights, environmental protections, immigration reform and more in the balance this November, it’s critical that we carry this momentum into the general election.

Melissa Hurtado for State Senate Launches Districtwide
Outreach Tour Tour to reach 21 cities in Senate District 14
Melissa Hurtado for State Senate kicked off a 21-city tour in Senate District 14, the campaign announced today.
“In launching this outreach tour, I plan to build on the work I’ve been doing in our community. I will visit every town and city, holding meet and greets, walking precincts, talking with farmers, small business owners, educators, and health professionals, and meeting with law enforcement for ride-alongs. My goal is to learn more about the top concerns in Senate District 14 and what the voters here need most from Sacramento,” said Melissa Hurtado. “I’m working to build partnerships with everyone I can so that I’m the best advocate for this Valley in the State Senate.”
Hurtado plans to spend time in 21 cities and has already been at work in the communities of Hanford, Porterville, Reedley and Farmersville. Updates from her tour are posted on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/hurtadoforsenate.

I am so excited and honored to announce that Senator Barbara Boxer has endorsed our campaign for a better, stronger California!
Senator Boxer has been a bold and fearless leader and a champion for our environment, affordable healthcare, and women and families. She has never wavered from taking on the toughest fights head-on.
My first job after business school was working for the California Democratic Party in 1992, when we turned California blue and elected both Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer to the U.S. Senate. These women are history makers, and it means so much to me to have both of these incredible leaders behind this campaign.
Heading into the summer, we are continuing to build incredible momentum behind this campaign. From women’s groups, to organizations fighting for equality, to teachers, our County Captains, and courageous leaders throughout this great state, this growing, powerful coalition is going to help propel us to victory on Election Day in November.
And yet, the foundation of this campaign is all of you who continue to support us and spread the word about our message and work engaging voters in all 58 counties. Thank you!
Had it not been for the landmark Brown v. Board of Education, I likely would not have become a lawyer, or a prosecutor, or been elected district attorney, or the Attorney General of California. And I certainly would not have been a United States Senator.
As part of only the second class to integrate the Berkeley public schools, I know from firsthand experience how consequential an individual justice on the Supreme Court can be to the lives of Americans.
When at its best, the Supreme Court has advanced the cause of justice and enforced the principle of equality; at its worst, it has upheld racial segregation, voter suppression, and the right of corporations to flood dark money into elections.
Brett Kavanaugh represents a fundamental threat to the promise of justice and equality, which is why I am announcing that I will oppose his nomination to the Supreme Court.
Trump made clear during the 2016 presidential campaign that he’d create a litmus test for Supreme Court Justices — overturn Roe v. Wade and rule against the Affordable Care Act.
Judge Kavanaugh makes good on that promise. As recently as last year, he disregarded Supreme Court precedent on Roe and opposed the reproductive health care rights of a vulnerable young woman — in a ruling that was overturned by a sitting of all judges on his court.
The health of women and the rights of all Americans are on the line in this Supreme Court fight. Numerous cases involving women’s health are only one step away from the Supreme Court. Those are the stakes of this nomination and we must demand a mainstream jurist worthy of our country.
Senator Harris Statement Opposing Nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris released the following statement tonight on the nomination of U.S. Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States:
“The Supreme Court has a profound impact on the rights—and lives—of all Americans. When at its best, it has advanced the meaning of those words above its doors, ‘Equal Justice Under Law.’ At its worst, the Supreme Court has upheld racial segregation, enabled voter suppression, and equated corporations with people. Whether or a not the Supreme Court enforces the spirit of those words, ‘Equal Justice Under Law,’ is determined by the individuals who sit on that Court.
“Judge Brett Kavanaugh represents a direct and fundamental threat to that promise of equality and so I will oppose his nomination to the Supreme Court. Specifically, as a replacement for Justice Anthony Kennedy, his nomination presents an existential threat to the health care of hundreds of millions of Americans.
“During the 2016 presidential campaign, President Trump made clear that he had a litmus test for Supreme Court Justices—overturn Roe v. Wade and oppose a woman’s constitutionally-protected right to make her own health care decisions. The President then released a list of nominees who had been vetted to meet that test. Judge Kavanaugh is on that list.
“Judge Kavanaugh has consistently proven to be a conservative ideologue instead of a mainstream jurist. As recently as last year, he disregarded Supreme Court precedent and opposed the health care rights of a vulnerable young woman. That ruling was overturned by a sitting of all the judges on his court. In 2015, Kavanaugh wrote that an employer, based on their personal beliefs, can deny their employee access to birth control coverage.
“I know personally just how consequential this seat on the Supreme Court is. Almost two decades after the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, I was part of only the second class to integrate the Berkeley, California public schools. If that Court had not issued that unanimous opinion led by Chief Justice Earl Warren in that case argued by Thurgood Marshall, I likely would not have become a lawyer, or a prosecutor, or a been elected district attorney, or the Attorney General of California. And I certainly would not have become a United States Senator.
“That’s the power an individual Supreme Court Justice holds. Those are the stakes of this nomination. We must demand a mainstream jurist worthy of our great country.”
Unfortunately, a woman’s right to choose isn’t the only thing on the line. Decades of civil rights advancements for African Americans, women, and the LGBTQ community are at risk. Not to mention voting rights and affordable health care for Americans.
If the Senate does not intervene, the balance of the court will turn our country backwards for decades to come.
That’s why I’m calling for the Senate to do whatever it takes to stop this nominee.
We need our leaders to put relentless pressure on Republicans and Democrats who may vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh.
We must also work with outside organizations to generate grassroots energy pressuring swing Senators to vote the right way.
Conservatives are more excited than ever that this is their chance to overturn Roe v. Wade, roll back civil rights advancements, and keep our country stalled.
It’s simply unacceptable that our children may have fewer rights than we enjoy today.
We will fight this every step of the way. And together, we will win.
