Illegal border crossings in the US are at their lowest levels since 1971. We must keep our country safe, but border patrol agents are more than prepared for the ebb and flow of border crossings.
So why is Trump requesting that National Guard units be sent to the border while he waits for his racist sham of a wall to be built?
The same reason his Justice Department is suing California over legislation we passed to protect immigrants: to use racism and xenophobia to divide us, incite fears, and stoke tensions with Mexico.
Here’s how we fight back: Pooling our collective voices and power together, demanding accountability, and demanding that states across the country rise to the challenge.
All my life, as a kid growing up in poverty in a border town, as a community organizer, and as a legislator, I’ve seen first-hand the contributions of the undocumented community to California’s culture and economy.
I know that tearing families apart is bad for business, not just our global image.
And I know that militarizing our border with Mexico is the act of a desperate president, eager to appease his extreme right-wing base at any cost to our nation.

During an event in Virginia yesterday, Trump said,
“In many places, like California, the same person votes many times. You probably heard about that. They always like to say ‘oh that’s a conspiracy theory.’ Not a conspiracy theory, folks. Millions and millions of people.”
Not true.
The real fraud is the occupant of the Oval Office.
Trump continues to spew his same old lies about “millions of illegal voters” in California.
Trump’s dishonesty and baseless rants about “widespread” voter fraud dishonor local elections officials and the thousands of volunteers who work hard and give of their time to administer our elections with integrity.
I spoke with CBS LA to counter Trump’s allegations of widespread voter fraud and point out how they undermine confidence in our elections. Watch the segment here.
We can not and will not let Trump’s lies go unanswered. And we will not let Trump’s attacks slow down our mission to secure our elections and defend our democracy.

Big news.
I am so happy to announce that we’ve received the endorsement of End Citizens United — the national grassroots organization working to reform our broken campaign finance system.
Just like you, I’m frustrated and disgusted by the big money interests that have taken over our political system. These interests spent a billion dollars electing Donald Trump. What did they get in return? A trillion-and-a-half-dollar tax cut. That’s a 150,000 percent return on their money! It’s outrageous. Now the GOP wants to “pay” for their tax cuts by slashing Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and all of our social safety nets.
It’s not enough to commit to reforming the system — we must lead by example right now. That’s why I’ve pledged to reject all corporate PAC money to this campaign.
I’m running to be your voice in Washington so we can fight for the things we care about and need — from affordable health care access to improving the education system and bringing good paying jobs to our local economy.
I’m depending on small-dollar, grassroots donations to get there. Please help me run a strong, local campaign that’s fueled by the grassroots, Michael.

As the Trump Administration continues to attack California’s values, I’ve stood ready to defend fairness and opportunity. Today, the New York Times profiled several of the legal challenges we’ve undertaken to protect our way of life. I invite you to read it here.
Whether protecting our public lands, public safety, Dreamers, federal funding, or our environment, we don’t go looking for a fight, but we will continue to stand up – and win – for all Californians.

We’re working hard to earn every vote, and it’s a family effort! Here are some of the realities of a campaign:
– 6am Alarm: fixed kids’ lunch, left thank you note for husband, and kissed sleepy kids as I ran out the door.
– On drive to LA: multiple calls, policy reads, Twitter check-ins, and stops for gas.
– Meetings: listening to what we need in our state, hearing the angst in our communities and inspiring leaders to think differently. Challenging us all to be compassionate, future-oriented, and hopeful.
– Return drive: tired, but decided to get back (a preferred choice because I get to see the kids).
– At midnight: Walk in the door, on the table, poems, pictures, and presents!
