Dear Friend,

Before heading back to Washington next week, I’ve taken the opportunity to meet with community leaders and constituents from across the district to hear about their priorities and discuss the important work we’ve been doing. Here are some of the highlights for the week of April 22nd:

Securing Access for the Central Valley Enhancement of (SAVE) Water Resources Act

The SAVE Water Resources Act addresses the ongoing challenges our Valley faces in securing water for our farmers. I am proud to be an original co-sponsor for this new legislation announced by Rep. Josh Harder earlier this week. By implementing competitive financing programs and funding infrastructure projects and increased water storage, I think this legislation would lay important groundwork for further efforts to expand our Valley’s water supply. I am working on a complementary piece of legislation to build on this significant step.

Madera High School Robotics

Last weekend, Madera High’s Madtown Robotics team won the World Championship! I am exceptionally proud of these hardworking students for this remarkable accomplishment. They remind us that the Valley is not only the #1 region for agriculture, it’s also filled with innovation.

Amazon

Last Friday, I toured Amazon’s campus in Fresno, which provided valuable insight into the role Amazon will play in creating skilled jobs in the Valley. It also showcased the use of increased automation in the business sector.

Armenian Genocide

On April 24th, we commemorated the 104th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, honoring those lost in this horrific tragedy and celebrating the resilient spirit of the Armenian people. We must never forget.

UC Merced

On Thursday, I spent the day at UC Merced, home of the Bobcats. I discussed medical education and academic planning with Provost Gregg Camfield, and got new insights on our watershed that could lead to innovative ways of bringing more water to the valley. As the newest UC, it is imperative that we  support Merced as it advances higher education in California.

Congressional Art Competition – Merced

Also Thursday, I hosted a reception at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center for the Congressional Art Competition. We showcased over 20 works of art from schools around the county. These students amazed me with their talent. It’s going to be hard for the judges to pick a winner! The winning artwork will be displayed at the Capitol in DC, with runner-up pieces going to my district offices.
