This Sunday marked the 52nd anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, landmark legislation that protects and expands voting rights for all eligible Americans.
Two years ago, I was invited by President Obama to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. Voting rights advocates from across the country convened to discuss how we can protect and expand the vote for eligible citizens.
What a difference a President makes.
Under President Trump we’re not having a conversation about advancing voting rights — instead we’re seeing attack after attack on our right to vote. We’ve been fighting this at the state level for years now: cynical voter ID laws, reduction of early voting opportunities, and the purging of eligible voters from the rolls. Trump is working to make it harder for citizens to exercise our right to vote — we will fight back at every turn.
As California Secretary of State, I will continue to fight against any and all of Trump’s efforts to keep eligible voters from registering and voting. But I need your help. We have to resist and we have to persist.
Please take a moment to watch and share this video I taped for Mic.com on the importance of our right to vote and why we must keep fighting. The more people are aware of how our rights are under attack, the stronger we can fight back.
(Or forward this email to five friends.)
From Paul Revere to Seneca Falls to Selma, people fought for their voting rights and we owe it to them to keep fighting. I know this fight will take a lot of energy and time but I know together, we will win.
Thank you,
Alex Padilla
