South Carolina,
Today, I’m reintroducing the Marijuana Justice Act.This bill is so close to my heart — not only would it legalize marijuana at the federal level, but it would apply retroactively to people currently serving time for marijuana offenses and reinvest savings in communities hardest hit by the war on drugs.
When I was a teenager growing up in a largely white neighborhood, my parents told me things were different for me than for a lot of my friends. They told me I had to be more careful when it came to staying out late or going to parties. And they were right.
We’ve seen how our drug laws have disproportionately criminalized black and brown people. And even though there is no difference in marijuana use between blacks and whites, black Americans are 3.7 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession.
I know too many families — many in my own city of Newark, New Jersey — who have found themselves victims of a war not on drugs, but on people.
I have met countless good people who couldn’t find a job, couldn’t find a decent place to live, and couldn’t support their families because they had a criminal record for doing something that two of the last three presidents say they’ve done.
These laws fracture communities, destroy families, and make us all less safe — it’s time we fix this broken system.
