Americans shouldn’t have to wonder if their president and other elected officials are using their influence to enrich their own bottom line.
But President Trump has refused to release his tax returns. Now he’s pushing tax “reform” measures that could potentially make him more than $1 billion.
I’ve always fought for transparency as California’s state treasurer and controller. I released my tax returns so that Californians know I’ll be accountable to them as governor.
There’s no reason that President Trump shouldn’t do the same.

Every day when I go to work, I put the people of California first, and Californians know that — in part because I made my tax returns public.
But without knowing how our president makes his income, what debts he owes to whom, and how much money he stands to gain from upending the tax code, it’s harder for Americans to know whether he can be trusted.
We shouldn’t have to wonder.
