Earlier today — just days after his very own Justice Department indicted 12 Russian intelligence agents for interfering in our democracy — Donald Trump stood next to Russian President Vladimir Putin and took Putin’s side over America’s. Instead of denouncing Russia’s attack on our democracy, he went after American institutions.

It’s easy to get desensitized to the horror of Donald Trump, but this was truly a shocking moment, Jeff. Never before has a U.S. president failed so spectacularly to stand up to a hostile foreign power.

Now more than ever, we need a Congress that is prepared to defend our democracy and hold this president accountable. We must establish a check and balance on Trump, and we must do it now.

As if things couldn’t get any more appalling, Trump said he wanted to work with Putin to investigate the intelligence agents who were indicted for conspiring against the United States. American officials told Trump who set fire to our democracy, and instead of believing them, he invited the arsonist to investigate.

Republican leaders have a choice: They can either hold this president accountable for his disgrace to our democracy, or stand with him and send a crystal-clear message that it’s fine for a foreign power to attack Americans as long as it serves their political interests.

Thank you for joining the fight to defend our democracy.

P.S. Trump’s shameful press conference with Putin is a reminder that his presidency is a national disgrace, and we must establish a check on his power. That starts with taking back Congress this November.
