In 1977, Harvey Milk became the first openly gay elected official in California history. Representing the Castro on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, Milk quickly introduced an ordinance to outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation; the law passed 11-1. He was instrumental in boosting the visibility of the gay community, and had a knack for building broad coalitions between marginalized groups, unions, and activists.Harvey Milk was senselessly murdered on November 27, 1978, but his legacy continues to inspire generations of LGBTQ+ leaders. In 2009, Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. These are the stories that make up the California Democratic Party. We are proud to uplift the leaders, groundbreakers, and movement makers at the forefront of the fight for inclusion and democratic values in California.
