Over the last couple of days, you may have heard speculation about me running to represent the 25th Congressional District. I am touched and humbled by the encouragement I received to run. It would be an honor to serve in the United States Congress, but this is not the right time for me to do so.

As Secretary of State, I take my responsibility to secure our free and fair elections to heart. And as Chair of the California Complete Count Committee, I take the importance of the decennial census extremely seriously. Between the 2020 Census and the presidential primary and general elections, next year will be extremely consequential for California and the nation, and I believe I can best serve in my current capacity.

Earlier this year, I spoke at the California Democratic Party Convention and shared this video that outlined the work we’ve been doing and the challenges that remain. Please watch (or watch again) and recommit to doing your part in 2020:

Since day one as Secretary of State, I’ve poured my heart and soul into defending and strengthening our democracy. The urgency of this work has been amplified since 2016. I hope that I can continue to count on you to support our efforts to keep our elections secure, accessible, and welcoming to all eligible voters. And I ask that you also help us ensure that each and every resident of California is counted in the 2020 census.

I thank Congressmember Katie Hill for her service and commend her for her tremendous effort last year to turn the 25th District blue. I look forward to supporting whoever the Democratic nominee is to keep the 25th District blue. And please know that I will work relentlessly for the next 370 days to make Trump a one term president.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

Alex Padilla
