Donald Trump says we’re a nation of laws. Apparently, that doesn’t apply to Trump’s closest friends.
Trump continues to double down on his endorsement of white supremacy and racism. Less than two weeks after the tragedy in Charlottesville, Trump has pardoned former Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Arpaio is a convicted felon who openly promoted racial profiling and discrimination against the Latino community in Arizona, a community he was sworn to protect and in violation of the Constitution he swore to uphold. Arpaio refused to follow a court order to end his practice of detaining people merely on suspicion of their legal status.
Arpaio used his position as Sheriff to racially profile Latinos and terrorize our community.
Donald Trump calls convicted racist Joe Arpaio a patriot, but his pardon is a blatant attack on American values and makes a mockery of our justice system.
Trump continues to stand behind white supremacy in many forms. Remember Kris Kobach, the co-chair of Trump’s voter fraud commission? Kobach is the author of the very law that Joe Arpaio abused to racially profile and terrorize the Latino community.
And Arpaio’s pardon further divides our nation, fuels bigotry, and undermines the rule of law. As Americans, we cannot stand by as Trump endorses institutionalized discrimination, from voter suppression to threatening to end DACA to pardoning a man that terrorized communities of color. We will persist and we will resist.
