I have really big news. Last week, the House of Representatives passed the first major piece of legislation on gun violence in a generation. It’s called HR 8. Now, it heads to the Senate.
This bill would mandate background checks for every gun purchase in this country. It goes a long way toward making sure people with criminal records or a history of mental illness can’t get their hands on a gun.
Right now, I need your help in making sure this bill gets a vote on the Senate floor. We know the NRA and the gun lobby will do everything in their power to stop it. That’s why we need to come together to show the strength of our movement.
We can’t lose sight of how important this moment is in our history, and how hard we have worked to get here.
A little more than one year ago, the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School led millions of people in marches across the country to demand action on gun violence.
And throughout 2018, people in communities across our nation registered voters, knocked on doors, and organized to elect leaders who are willing to stand up to the gun lobby and do what’s right.
Last week, new members of Congress like Rep. Lucy McBath — who became an activist for social justice after her son was shot and killed — voted to pass the first significant legislation on gun violence in 20 years.
This is a great step forward. When we work together, arm in arm, to organize and raise our voices to demand action, we can win. But our fight is not yet done. I need you to add your voice right now:
This is just the first of many fights to come in our work to end gun violence. I know that by working together, organizing on every block in every community of this country, we can take on the gun lobby and win.
