The artist and musician Common just held a free concert for 25,000 people to promote the dream of schools not prisons for our youth. But the real magic came after, when Common joined formerly incarcerated youth at my office to talk to legislators about Senate Bill 395. Watch what happened:
California Democrats are proof you don’t have to be a Grammy winner to make a difference. The CADEM Executive Board just voted to support Senate Bill 395, part of the #EquityAndJustice package of bills to promote rehabilitation and prevention. SB 395 will require that young people consult with a lawyer before they waive their Miranda rights in a police interrogation. We need SB 395 because young people are much more likely than adults to confess to a crime they didn’t commit. A study of exonerations found 42% of juveniles had made a false confession. SB 395 cleared the Senate and is headed to the Assembly for a vote in the next few days. I am so proud to be a California Democrat. You are helping give young people not just a first chance, but a second chance at their futures. Thank You, Senator Ricardo Lara
