Rep. TJ Cox on Passage of American Dream and Promise Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman TJ Cox (CA-21) joined his colleagues in voting to pass H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, landmark legislation that provides permanent legal status for our nation’s DREAMers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders.
“This bill provides a pathway to permanent legal status for our DREAMers, people with Temporary Protected Status, and Deferred Enforced Departure holders, who contribute to and strengthen our country every day. They are just as American as my own children,” said Congressman Cox.
“The American Dream and Promise Act requires applicants to pass extensive background checks and be fully paid up in taxes. These people are our kids and today they are lawyers, doctors, and nurses. They want to live lawfully and continue contributing to the economy in the only country they’ve ever known to be home.
“As a businessman, I recognize immigration as both a moral good for our country but also a great investment in our economy. Immigrants and DACA recipients start businesses, raise families, and enrich our culture, and we can do so much just by giving them the basic dignity of permanent residence with a path to citizenship.”
Background: In the 21st Congressional District alone, there are an estimated 7,400 DACA recipients, and nearly 12,000 people are eligible to apply. The economic loss from deporting DACA workers in the 21st District would exceed more than $400,000,000 annually.
