From the minute Donald Trump learned he’d lost the popular vote last year, he’s been spouting off the bogus claim that he would have won it if not for between 3 and 5 million “illegal” votes. Last week, he signed an executive order creating a presidential commission to investigate this completely made-up problem.
This commission, so Trump says, is supposed to ensure the integrity of our elections. But the real threat to our right to vote is coming from Republicans — in the form of voting restrictions and gerrymandering.
In 2016, a federal court ruled that North Carolina’s voter ID requirements and reductions to voting hours and locations were unconstitutional because they targeted African-American voters “with almost surgical precision.” As of this morning, after the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of that judge’s ruling, the law is dead — an important but far too uncommon victory for democracy.
But North Carolina isn’t an isolated incident. This is going on in Republican-controlled state legislatures all over the country. Just recently, for example, federal judges in Texas tossed out the Republican-drawn legislative districts because they intentionally discriminate against voters in communities of color.
Let that sink in, intentional racial discrimination to swing elections the GOP’s way.
So it’s true that our access to the ballot box is under attack — but those attacks are coming from Republicans. We can’t trust Donald Trump or his administration to protect our most important right.
It’s up to us to stop the GOP’s assault on the right to vote. Add your name if you’ll stand with Democrats and fight:
