Our constitutional system of government gives everyone a voice, through their vote, in our vast government. Through that vote, we can send someone to Washington, D.C., who will advocate for us, fight to advance our goals, and support laws that benefit us. Or we can do what we’ve done for the last ten years — send Tom McClintock to Congress.
Tom McClintock has not been fighting to advance goals that will benefit his District, or the country. His lies around the tax bill that Republicans pushed through in 2017 are a perfect example. Tom McClintock continues to insist that it benefits his constituents — that it resulted in economic expansion — even when all of the facts prove otherwise. The 2017 tax bill benefits a wealthy few; the rest of us are worse off. Tax revenues have sharply declined, and our deficit has skyrocketed. But none of the GOP’s promises have materialized.
GDP didn’t increase to the 4, 5 or 6% Republicans predicted. There’s been no rise in job creation. Instead the GDP has chugged along at the same rate, and job creation has actually dropped, as compared to the final years of the Obama administration. Business investment, which should have gone up in 2019, also has been declining. And the deficit will only get worse as time goes along and new provisions kick in to further reduce tax revenue. As this article explains, “[t]he 2017 tax package was a mammoth fraud that put the GOP’s political priorities and ideological dogma ahead of the welfare of our children and grandchildren.”
Which brings us back to our question. What do we want from a representative? At Sierra Forward, we want someone who will be honest with us, pursue policies that can be reasonably expected to achieve the goals promised, and own their mistakes. That’s why we are so opposed to re-electing Tom McClintock.
California’s 4th District deserves better. We deserve a representative who sees our challenges with clear eyes and takes meaningful action to fix them. We deserve a representative who truly cares about what happens in this District. We deserve a representative who will fight for us.
Join us, as we fight to send Tom McClintock back to his own District, and to finally stop him from selling us out, one vote at a time.
Because we know, as Margaret Mead said, that “a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
