While politics may sometimes divide us, we Californians are all bound by certain principles—every Californian is equal under the law, and we’re prepared to fight for that freedom. This ethic is deep within me. I was born on a U.S. Army base, the son of a U.S. Army Captain, and I’ve had the privilege to lead all branches of our military as Ambassador and receive the U.S. Navy’s highest civilian honor.
These principles are why I battled on behalf of Navy Lieutenant Commander Paul Thomasson in his fight against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. He served our nation with great distinction, and would not lie or hide. He fought for all Americans, and so should we. That’s why I’m sharing this video. President Trump’s recent attacks against our LGBTQ service members remind us how fragile our freedoms can be. Ultimately, we are all in this together—when we turn away brave service members, we weaken our security and the principles for which they fight. So it’s important to tell the stories of people like Lt. Commander Thomasson who showed true courage. Sometimes this requires risking your job, enduring criticism, and even taking on your own party. But ultimately, we have to do this; it’s what define us as Californians. Please take a moment and share our video through email and on your social media networks using the links below. Best,
