San Francisco Chronicle: Judge allows California to sue Trump administration over census question
This is big news for California’s effort to stop Trump from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census. Now we must turn up the pressure on the Trump administration to drop this reckless pursuit that would derail the integrity of the census.
We know that a citizenship question on the census would discourage immigrant communities from responding, resulting in an undercount of our population. That’s why the question has not appeared on the decennial Census for more than fifty years.
The census must be accurate, and we must count everyone. That’s why I’m standing with California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to tell the Trump administration “No!” on the citizenship question in the 2020 census.
If we have an undercount of our population, vital federal services like homeland security funding, natural disaster preparation, transportation resources, and even resources for our schools could all be drastically cut.
But adding a citizenship question to the census isn’t merely a bad idea –– it’s unconstitutional.
The United States Constitution requires a total population count. The Trump administration is trying to hijack the census for political gain, and we can’t allow them to succeed.
