Vote NO on Prop 6

Many California Republicans have staked their campaigns on what they refer to as a promise to “repeal the gas tax.” This would be disastrous for our state. Roads and bridges need constant repair, and the fairest way to fund that is by establishing a user fee whereby those who drive on these roads contribute to maintaining them. The cost to do so is always increasing, particularly with the Trump administration’s new tariffs adding costs to imported construction supplies. Californians need to defeat Prop 6.

Prop 6 takes money away from bridge and road safety. Allowing Prop 6 to pass would undo Prop 69, which Californians passed in June. That proposition allocated the incoming money to fix roads, bridges and transportation infrastructure. If Prop 6 passes, that money disappears and Californians do not get what they voted for earlier this year.

Furthermore, Prop 6 requires that all future fuel and vehicle tax increases be submitted as a ballot measure rather than being addressed by the state legislature. Now that California is choosing to elect fewer and fewer Republicans, the red party has decided to try and take away power from our elected representatives. It is a a last-ditch effort to weaken our state republic.

The Central Valley, in particular, will suffer if Prop 6 passes, losing $2.3 billion needed to fix bridges, overpasses and crumbling road surfaces.

In Fresno County alone, this would cancel 44 bridge projects, 32 miles of Highway 99 repairs and a new Altamont Corridor Express service to Sacramento. Smaller towns and counties will suffer even more, losing out on needed local road repairs and bridge replacements.

California Professional Firefighters and the California Association of Highway Patrolmen oppose Prop 6 as do civil engineers, earthquake experts and public safety organizations.
