The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.
Dear Democrats:
My name is Tony Thurmond and I’m running for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. I believe deeply in the power of public education to change lives, because my public school education changed my life.
This past weekend I shared my story with many of you in Anaheim for the California Democratic Party Executive Board meeting. The energy there was palpable, and for good reason. Like many of you, I have never been more motivated to speak and act out in resistance to what I see happening in our country.
Like you, I am horrified by the President’s toleration of racists and bigots – and I am saddened. President Trump does not exemplify the values we want our children to learn. This past week I convened educators from across the state to talk about how we teach tolerance and combat hate in our schools.
But we can’t take back what President Trump has done. We can’t take back his words which encourage white supremacists or his pardon of a sheriff who abused his power to tear apart families. We can’t make him see that a hero is a hero no matter their chosen gender.
Only he can apologize for his actions.
So last week I introduced a resolution in the State Assembly calling upon Congress to censure President Trump, demanding his public apology, and calling on other state legislatures to do the same. Tomorrow we will vote on my resolution, and if we stand together as Democrats to pass it, California will become the first state in the nation to vote for the censure of President Trump.
As we should, because California is the epicenter of the resistance.
You can help move this resolution to a vote. Tweet, Facebook, and call your legislators to make your voice heard – Californians will not let President Trump’s disgraceful behavior go without consequence.
In Solidarity,
Tony Thurmond
