| I met up with Ellen Tara James-Penney for a cup of coffee and to hear her California story. It was remarkable in its uniqueness, but also in its familiar place in this new economy. Ellen’s a professor at San Jose State University helping young people prepare for jobs of the future, but the housing crisis and health care burdens have forced Ellen and her husband to live out of their car.
There are plenty of Californians doing very well, but we need to do more to empower people like Ellen who are working hard and still not able to afford basic necessities. That’s what my campaign is about—giving Californians the tools they need to be successful and helping solve the though problems facing our state like affordable housing, preparing for rapidly changing job markets, and treating the rise in mental health illness and opioid addiction.
