Welcome to Women’s History Month!

Did you know that 2019 marks the Centennial Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment securing the legal right of women to vote? It is remarkable that that the right for women to vote was not guaranteed in the Constitution! It took another year, 1920, before adoption by the 2/3 supermajority of states necessary to fully implement an Amendment.

Despite the obstacles implemented to impede our full inclusion into government, women have worked to build political power and, today, it is notable in many ways. Last year, California elected a woman, Eleni Kounalakis, to serve as the second highest ranking Executive for the first time in history (and she was endorsed and supported by NWPC California!). We cannot note frequently enough that 4 of 5 seats of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, one of the most powerful legislative bodies in the country, are held by women (all of whom were endorsed and supported by NWPC). And, it is commendable that there are 5 women (all of whom serve in Congress) simultaneously running strong campaigns to seek the Presidential nomination of a major political party in 2020 and one of them, Senator Kamala Harris, is a California native who has served at the local, statewide and national level (and was endorsed by NWPC each step of the way). 2020 may be the year that we finally break the glass ceiling to service in the highest office in America!

The campaigns and service of all these women are significant steps towards progress, but there is still much work to do. It is through your support that NWPC serves as a critical contributor to the success of many of these women. Your membership, your contributions, your woman hours volunteering at events and on campaigns, your encouragement of women ensures that they are successful. If you are a current member of NWPC, thank you for your support. If you’re not already a member, please, in honor of Women’s History Month, consider joining us. Also, we invite you to contribute to the NWPC California Political Action Committee to help us build our war chest for the 2019-2020 Election Cycle. 2020 is shaping up to be an unprecedented election year for women in California and across the nation, and we are hard at work positioning ourselves to be nimble and impactful. With your help, NWPC California will continue the fight to ensure that women run, women win!

In solidarity,

Today is International Womyn’s Day. Celebrated on March 8 every year, it is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights.

#BalanceforBetter is the theme for this year’s International Womyn’s Day. The 2019 initiative is aimed at gender equality, a greater awareness of discrimination and a celebration of women’s achievements.

Even though today is a day the world celebrates women, it should be further celebrated and noted that women have been making history every single day.  We at NWPC California are honored and proud to stand alongside women who have the courage to run for political office.

NWPC CA TAKES OVER SACRAMENTO!

Our State Board had its first in person quarterly meeting of the year in February.
