Joe Biden Picks Senator Melissa Hurtado for National Latino Leadership Committee
Today, Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) announced she has been selected by Joe Biden’s campaign for President to serve on the Biden Latino Leadership Committee.
“It is truly an honor to be chosen to serve on this pivotal committee,” said Senator Hurtado. “We know that throughout our state and nation, many communities have never fully recovered from the Great Recession and access to healthcare remains a challenge. Compounding this, the pandemic has acutely impacted our immigrant communities and communities of color. It is critical that we have a leader at the national level who will listen and work to address the challenges our country faces with seriousness, humility, and competence. Joe Biden is that leader, and I am looking forward to hitting the ground running on the Biden Latino Leadership Committee to ensure our community’s voices are heard and that we come out strongly to ensure a Biden victory in November.”
Biden’s campaign selected 40 leaders across 18 states including 5 from California to serve on this national committee. Senator Hurtado is 1 of 2 female California leaders handpicked for the committee; LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis is heading the national committee. The committee is made up of a robust list of local and state leaders tasked with recruiting talent in battleground states, providing input on policy initiatives, engaging community leaders, and providing input on Latino outreach.
Joe Biden said he is “running to build an America that works for everyone, and giving Latinos a shot at the American dream is a core part of my vision for this nation.”
“I am honored to have such a strong group of elected leaders on this committee — many who I have known for a very long time — that embody the diversity of the Latino community and I know that their insights will prove invaluable in supporting my campaign’s Latino outreach efforts across the United States,” the former vice president said.
Senator Hurtado continued: “As an early supporter of Joe Biden’s campaign for President, I am excited and humbled by the work ahead to ensure we win back the White House. Joe Biden’s experience and leadership is exactly what we need to make it through our present crises and restore the soul of our nation.”
Senator Melissa Hurtado was first elected to the California State Senate in 2018, flipping the 14th Senate District from red to blue. The daughter of immigrant parents and the first in her family to graduate from college, Hurtado is the youngest woman ever elected to the State Senate and has fought for all families to have access to healthcare, quality schools, good paying jobs and the opportunity for a better life.
