It’s 2019, not 1920

This weekend I spoke at the California Democratic Party convention. In front of over 3,000 party delegates, I affirmed my commitment to defending our state from President Trump’s constant barrage of attacks. 

While the President tries to roll back access to healthcare, LGBTQ rights, and environmental protections, in California, we won’t stand for this because we know it’s 2019, not 1920. 

We blocked the repeal of DACA. We blocked the President’s attempts to deny birth control coverage. We blocked the vicious Title X gag rule. 

California has sued this administration more than 50 times. And so far, we’ve secured 34 victories in our fights. 

The Golden State does not backslide –– even if the White House does. During the void of leadership in Washington, California has moved forward on collective bargaining, on clean energy, and criminal justice reform. 

We’re the state that graduates more students from college and ensures healthcare for more Americans than any other state in the nation. 

We’re home to Cesar Chavez, the Clean Air Act, and the most progressive gun safety laws in this country –– while being the 5th largest economy in the world. 

So my fellow Democrats, look around, California is America. We’ll continue to lead the nation while the President retreats.
