In the last six months

Dear Friend,

I ran for State Superintendent of Public Instruction so all of California’s children may realize the promise of a quality public education, no matter their background or their challenges.

In the six months since I was sworn into office, we have been working hard to align our state’s public education system with our shared values: 

We launched a statewide literacy campaign and sent nearly $1.5 million dollars to school districts with some of the greatest literacy needs in our state.

We mediated or supported strike mediation efforts for 3 school districts in order to get students and teachers back into their classrooms as quickly as possible.

We worked with the Governor to secure funds in the state budget to build affordable housing for teachers and classified staff. 

We established transition work groups focused on increasing revenue for schools, improving special education, providing dual language immersion and STEAM programs, and closing the achievement gap.

We have spent every day of the last six months working to meet these needs, and there’s much more to achieve for our kids, teachers, and families.
