The top climate scientists on earth tell us we have until 2030 to significantly roll back greenhouse-gas emissions if we have any chance of avoiding the worst outcomes that the climate crisis presents.
They paint a bleak picture of what inaction means: A future where food production is threatened, coasts are flooded, and billions are displaced. But we don’t need to consider the hypotheticals. We’re already feeling the effects here in the Central Valley.
High emissions from vehicles in our highway corridors means we are home to some of the worst air quality in the entire nation — and it’s resulted in a full-blown public health crisis. In Kern County, records show Chronic Respiratory Disease stemming from poor air quality is the cause of death for 1 out of every 37 individuals — 14 times the rate of the rest of the United States. And in Kings County, we have the highest asthma rate in the entire state.
Curbing greenhouse-gas emissions is crucial if we’re going to clean our air. That’s why Congress passed the Climate Action Now Act which requires the United States to adhere to the Paris Agreement and reduce emissions.
Time and time again, we’ve seen Trump and his allies reject the truth instead of working for our environment and our human health. We have to demand better — for our community and for our future.
