| In the emotional days and weeks following the Columbine shootings, Americans were demanding answers and solutions. President Bill Clinton and his team began gathering all the research they could find. A book I co-authored about causes of youth violence was on the list. He read it, and then asked me to head up his Youth Violence Commission.
We got to work quickly, crafted bipartisan solutions, and launched a campaign to empower families to talk about youth violence and provide pathways to break the cycles of abuse and violence that beget more violence. Unfortunately, the election of George W. Bush in 2000 brought an end to our work. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about the lives destroyed by preventable violence in our country. Violence rates are rising again, and California can take the lead in changing that with proven solutions. As Lt. Governor, I can work to rebuild the coalitions that have stopped violence before. For the past few months, we’ve put together other stories of my work for you to share with your friends, family, and coworkers. It’s our way of helping you spread the word about what drives me, the challenges I’ve confronted, and what we’ve accomplished. Your efforts are clearly making a difference.
