This is not a hypothetical threat: The onslaught of state abortion bans represents the greatest threat to reproductive freedom in our lifetimes.

Last week, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed a six-week abortion ban into law. And last night, the Alabama state legislature sent a bill to the governor’s desk that would completely outlaw almost all abortion. It threatens doctors with life in prison—up to 99 years—for providing patients with health care, and GOP state legislators specifically declined to include exceptions for rape or incest.

Women’s lives will be in danger if these bans are allowed to stand, and low-income women, black women and women of color will suffer the most.

That’s why I just announced I’m going to Georgia tomorrow. We need to fight back, hard, on the frontlines.

This all-out assault on women’s constitutional rights is explicitly aimed at overturning Roe v. Wade, and we cannot stand for it. We need to loudly proclaim that reproductive rights are nonnegotiable and join together to defend them at every level—in Washington, in the courts and in the states.
