Today marks day 17 since Trump shut down the government in a desperate ploy to force Congress to pay for his border wall. This is now the third-longest government shutdown in our country’s history.
It’s important we lift up the stories of the Americans who are being hurt by the President’s dangerous choices. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers don’t know when their next paychecks will come. Food assistance benefits for nearly 39 million low-income Americans are under threat.
We must redouble our efforts to end this shutdown. If we want to win this fight, we have to make it personal. If you, your family or someone you care about is being affected by the government shutdown, I want to hear from you:
Let’s be clear: Trump’s shutdown was completely avoidable. The White House created this crisis and now, he refuses to back down or compromise. To make matters worse, Trump has said he’s prepared to continue the shutdown for months — or even years.
Hundreds of thousands of federal employees are unsure when they can expect their next paycheck. Punishing federal workers by withholding their pay over this border wall is despicable — but I know if enough of us raise our voices together, we can win this fight.
