I was elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction the same year that the anti-immigrant Prop 187 was passed by the voters of California. That year, the Republicans managed to take over the State Assembly.
I was one of only three (out of eight) elected Democratic state office holders. Governor Wilson threatened to have me recalled if I didn’t enforce Prop 187 by ordering teachers to do background checks on their students and report them to Immigration.
I refused the governor’s order, and I told him I would see him in court. I sent my department’s lawyer to argue against the Assistant State Attorney General over the constitutionality of Prop 187. We won. Prop 187 was declared unconstitutional.
Two years later, Democrats took back the State Assembly and we have not looked back.
As governor, I will not waste your precious tax dollars to deploy California’s National Guard to “guard” the border against imagined threats.
We are not going to demonize our immigrants who contribute so much to California and are one of the reasons we are the 6th largest economy in the world.
We are going to stand together and invest in our children and families because a people, united, will never be defeated. Share this email here.
