Speaker Pelosi, Cameron Kasky and I before the SOTU
Dear Thomas J,
In the House gallery for last night’s 2019 State of the Union address were many gun violence survivors, including my guest, Cameron Kasky, a student activist and survivor of the February 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Fla. But President Trump didn’t say a single word about stopping the most dangerous people from getting the most dangerous weapons. I was disappointed and underwhelmed by the President’s address, but I was not left without hope.
Why? Because this morning, about 12 hours after the President’s remarks, I joined my House Judiciary Committee colleagues for a hearing on H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 – the first congressional action on gun violence in nearly a decade. Finally, we have the opportunity to do something, because in America, the right to live – to survive a day in school, church, synagogue, the movies, or anywhere else without being mowed down by bullets – should be more important than anything else.
There is still so much work to be done. Congress must immediately pass universal background checks and then turn our attention to lifting the decades-old restriction that prevents the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from studying the impacts of gun violence. We must address and prevent the root causes of gang violence, ensure every American has access to quality mental health resources, and institute a real assault weapons ban so weapons of war no longer terrorize our communities.
As always, I am honored to represent you in Washington, DC, where I remain committed to go big, be bold, and do good to ensure every American has the freedom to dream.
Through all of this, my staff and I will be here for you. Please visit my website or contact my East Bay office at (510) 370-3322 if we can be of service in any way. To stay connected, join me on Twitter @RepSwalwell, and Facebook.
