It took decades to catch the man now suspected of being the Golden State Killer, and it finally happened through DNA testing.
There are currently more than 13,000 untested rape kits across California today, so how many more decades will it take to identify the perpetrators involved in those cases; and how many more Californians will they attack?
Not only do these untested rape kits pose a public safety risk, but it’s unconscionable that after bravely stepping forward to share their stories, survivors of sexual assault are forced to navigate the criminal justice system, and aren’t given the basic right to have their rape kits immediately tested.
At just $400 to $1,000 each, the small price we pay for testing a rape kit not only can provide crucial evidence to identify and prosecute violent criminals, but it can also provide justice for thousands of women across California.
As state treasurer, I can tell you — without hesitation — that California has the resources to immediately end the backlog, get violent criminals off the streets, and finally give survivors and the families of victims the justice they deserve.
Now we need to show we have the political will to get it done.
And if the backlog isn’t cleared by the time I become your next governor, I will push for immediate testing on day one. But Californians shouldn’t have to wait.
Join me in telling the California State Legislature: “End the backlog!” Add your name now.
