On Monday, Donald Trump gave a speech about his “environmental accomplishments.”
Seriously. Don’t laugh — it was so bad that even Fox News cut off the speech so they could fact-check the president. The speech was predictably filled with absurd lies, but this one stuck with me:
“From day one, my administration has made it a top priority to make sure America has among the very cleanest air and cleanest water on the planet.
Here’s the truth: The New York Times just reported that internal Trump polling shows his administration’s abominable environmental record is a HUGE electoral vulnerability with key voters like suburban women and millennials. So now Trump’s desperately trying to sweep his abysmal climate record under the rug.
Our drinking water isn’t “crystal clear,” but one thing is clear: Donald Trump knows that he is deeply vulnerable on issues of clean air, clean water, and the climate crisis. Donald Trump knows that his record of standing with fossil fuel CEOs instead of Americans who want climate action is a huge vulnerability for him in 2020 — and we agree.
We need a Democratic candidate who is willing to stand up to Donald Trump and call him out on his disastrous climate record. We can’t afford more middle-ground approaches or Democrats afraid to speak the truth about the climate crisis.
Jay’s plan will launch a national mobilization to move America to 100% clean energy, create 8 million jobs in a clean energy economy, and end our addiction to fossil fuels. We will defeat Donald Trump by attacking his failures on climate change, not by running from them.
With new polling in hand, Trump’s team is getting desperate. From day one, they’ve made it their top priority to make sure America crumbles under our climate crisis by giving handouts to Big Oil and Big Coal, rolling back our climate progress, and selling off our public lands.
