The other day I sat down with Vox for a conversation about the upcoming debates and the DNC’s commitment to a fair, transparent primary.
I wanted to make sure you didn’t miss it— it’s a long conversation, but I’m including this excerpt because it’s an important one. With an unprecedented number of Democratic candidates in the race right now, it’s never been more critical that we come together to build a strong Democratic Party.
Take a look.

I wanted to start off by talking about the new debate requirements. What was the impetus behind these changes?
Tom Perez Well, the impetus behind everything is we want to make sure we create a fair process, an inclusive process, a process that gives every single person the chance to articulate her or his vision for the American people.
You’re an integral member of the Democratic Party. That’s why I wanted to share an important aspect of our party’s strategy for taking back the White House and winning seats up and down the ballot in 2020 directly with you.
If we’re going to have any shot at winning the presidency next year, Democrats need to keep Donald Trump’s poll numbers as low as possible. If we continue holding him accountable, expose his administration’s culture of corruption, and keep his approval ratings low, we’ll have a good chance at taking back the White House. Here’s a look at where his approval numbers have been in May: This is the reality we face: This race will be closer than many are anticipating, and we can’t take anything for granted. Trump’s campaign, with the help of the RNC, has already outraised every Democratic presidential hopeful by a long shot, and he’s been campaigning since the day he was inaugurated. That’s why the DNC is working tirelessly to make the early, strategic investments it will take to cut Trump and the RNC’s lead. It’s why we’re building a rock-solid party infrastructure for our eventual presidential nominee and Democrats nationwide to inherit in the general election. And it’s why we need your help to close the gap now, while we still can.
