December 2020

Dear Friends,

have uplifting news to share as we head into the holiday season. It involves keeping people healthy and local care options accessible – through financing we arranged for a vital Orange County non-profit agency formerly known as Community SeniorServ Inc. (CSS).

Each year CSS, which recently changed its name to Meals on Wheels Orange County, provides some 10,000 seniors and low-income people with nutritional and care services. Until a few weeks ago, CSS was in danger of losing its Anaheim location. Then the board of the California Health Facilities Finance Authority (CHFFA), which I am honored to chair, came to the program’s rescue. With CHFFA’s help, CSS is purchasing the Anaheim facilities. Read more on page 3.

The State Treasurer’s Office continues to help Californians adapt to the changing conditions of work and home life during the COVID-19 crisis. For example, on page 4 you’ll find details on financing help available to families through the state’s Residential Energy Efficiency Loan (REEL) Assistance Program. With so many Californians spending more time at home, REEL has seen a surge in the number of homeowners and renters taking advantage of the assistance the program provides them when they upgrade to more efficient, money-saving energy systems.

Housing continues to be a high-level concern for all of us. We have to keep our eyes open for creative solutions, for models that demonstrate the progress we can make when we work together. I highlighted a powerful example of effective regional cooperation and community buy-in underway in Coachella Valley in an opinion article I recently wrote for CalMatters. Read it here.

Lastly, a sincere thank-you to The Bond Buyer and Northeast Women in Public Finance for bestowing on me a Freda Johnson Award for Trailblazing Women in Public Finance. Getting to meet, mentor, and support women in financial leadership roles is one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional life.

In Peace & Friendship,

California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, CPA

The big fights aren’t just happening in Georgia — we’re committed to keeping California the deepest shade of blue

California Democratic Party Logo

I hope you’ve celebrated well. We did something truly extraordinary together — we ousted Donald Trump from the White House.

Thanks to your efforts, he’ll be a one-term, impeached President and history books will not look at his legacy kindly.

While we won this battle, there’s still so much work ahead of us. California Democrats are uniting behind Rev. Warnock and Jon Ossoff in Georgia so we can have control of the Senate and give Biden the legislature he needs to fulfill his campaign promises. We have until January 5th to do everything we can to support the Peach state — I hope you’ll chip in a few bucks every month until Election Day.

The big fights aren’t just happening in Georgia — we’re committed to keeping California the deepest shade of blue with long-term, sustainable investments in digital organizing and innovations in campaign technology.

Facebook + Google announced their intensified restrictions on political ads and this has seriously hampered our ability to reach voters with COVID-safe digital organizing strategies.

Our communications team has forecasted we’ll need $5,000 in recurring, monthly donations to bolster our virtual outreach efforts. Can we count on you to chip in $5 per month so we can reach underserved California communities?

TJ COX / CD21 needs your help to cure ballots!

TJ COX / CD21 needs your help to cure ballots!

TJ COX / CD21 needs your help to cure ballots!
The Democratic majority in the House is slim … we cannot lose this seat.  Ballot curing provided the margin of victory – 862 votes – for TJ in 2018.  We know it works and we need to make it happen again!

CD21 has the greatest need in Kern County and needs volunteers to do in-person contact-less canvassing from now until December 1st.  Phone banking is not enough on its own.  You are needed!

The current vote margin favors Valadao by approximately 1,600 votes, but Kern County (a county that usually favors TJ Cox) has not completed counting the votes.

IS IT SAFE TO GO?

We know that many of us will not feel safe leaving our homes and traveling to CD21, and that this is a very individual decision. For those who are interested, three volunteers recently went to CD21 and shared their experiences from the training to voter contact.

Training … “Kickoff was in a union hall; everyone wore masks and stood or sat well apart. Maybe 10 -15 people in the room that could seat at least 100 at tables.”

Talking with voters … “At voter’s doors you can keep a safe distance, you hand them the clipboard, pen and paper and take it back. We were given hand sanitizer to use after each transaction. It’s short and outside.”

Overall experience … “I felt ok about it all. I enjoyed my weekend – it is great picking up the piece of paper from a thankful person. Wish there were more people.  I’ll be happy if TJ wins by the 9 votes I cured.”

“I’d say it’s really satisfying work helping voters make sure their vote is counted.  Some didn’t realize their vote had been rejected or were confused about how to cure it.  We chased down 11 ballot cures!”

Together, they cured 20 ballots!  We are encouraged by their experience and hope you will consider signing up if it feels like a safe option for you.
