The Seditious Tom McClintock

Dear Friend,

We are a Nation of laws, a Nation whose people have taken pride for most of its history in the firm belief that no person is above the law. We’ve seen over the last four years that Republicans like Tom McClintock don’t actually care about equal treatment under the law and will ignore the lawlessness of a Republican president. And now we see how far he and the rest of them would go – the sedition they would embrace – in their undisguised thirst for power.

Donald Trump lost the election. Decisively. Across the country, in dozens of cases, courts have examined and rejected the claims of election fraud being brought by Trump and his supporters. They can’t even make it out of the gate because this was “the most secure [election] in American history,” according to Chris Krebs – the lifelong Republican who was appointed to oversee the election but fired when he refused to embrace Trump’s lies. The supposed “fraud” that Trump sycophants like Tom McClintock continue to trumpet was occasional human error, but more often simply Republicans who didn’t understand how the election would work, or after-the-fact complaints about the system of review and counting adopted by election officials, because that system didn’t give them the win they coveted. Trump and his supporters are 1-58 in election cases and that single win was a meaningless procedural decision that did not embrace the fraud lie – and it is a lie – that Trump continues to bellow to his followers. This despite the fact that his own Attorney General, William Barr, has continued to maintain that the DOJ has “not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election.”

And then Texas filed its petition with the Supreme Court. And reasonable people – people who care about truth and facts and the law – were stunned that the Attorney General of one of the largest states in the Nation would embrace such lunacy, and that 17 other states and 126 members of Congress would support it. That case was an utterly baseless and cynical attempt by one state to impose its will on other states because its citizens had chosen a different presidential candidate. It had no chance but if it had, it would have subverted democracy in this country. As this article explains, Texas demanded the right to tell other states how to run their elections – and for the victor in those states to be rejected, and the states’ legislators to impose their will instead – because Texas didn’t like the results. Texas, in effect, wanted to replace the democracy in this Nation with an oligarchy – rule by a few – with Donald Trump as its leader.

Tom McClintock joined in that seditious quest. Although Trump and his cult have not been able to establish a single case of election fraud anywhere in the Nation and it now is evident to anyone willing to open their eyes and see that Joe Biden won in a free and fair election, Tom McClintock joined his colleagues in asking the Supreme Court to reject those election results, throw out the votes of millions of Americans (the vast majority of them African American), and hand the win to the loser, Donald Trump. It’s an egregious abuse of his office and rejection of the constitutional principles that he has sworn to serve.

Maybe he’s delusional. Maybe Tom McClintock has lost his connection to reality – forgotten the difference between right and wrong, and true and false. Maybe he actually believes the lies that have been rejected by every court to consider them. We doubt it. We’ve been watching Tom McClintock for a lot of years. We think it’s more likely that he’s a seditious liar.

In July 2016 McClintock wrote that “[t]he arrangement the Founders devised depends on dividing the powers of government in a manner that assures the ambitions of one group constantly check and contain the ambitions of another.  But this can only work so long as the powers are evenly divided; this, in turn can only work as long as those to whom we loan these powers are obedient to that Constitution; and this, in turn can only work as long as ‘We, the People,’ insist on it.  And the moment we cease to insist on it, we will forfeit that Constitution and the liberty it protects.”

Lofty words, that McClintock used – as he did during the Obama Administration – as a bludgeon to try to assert his will over a president he didn’t like. He hasn’t written anything like this since because he likes the autocrat his party chose to lead this country. Tom McClintock has shown us that his words always have been as empty as his deeds.

Tom McClintock has chosen his side – the side that would “forfeit that Constitution and the liberty it protects.” He’s rejected democracy. It’s long past time for us to reject him. We, the members of Sierra Forward, declare now that we will never forgive him for this act of sedition. We will never let him live it down. It is a betrayal of everything he claims to believe – of the country he is sworn to serve – and he should pay for it in 2022. We don’t know who will challenge him. But we know we will be there to fight for that person’s victory, and finally send Tom McClintock back to his own District. Once and for all. Please consider a donation to our on-going efforts to hold Tom McClintock accountable.

My nomination

My nomination

It is with great honor that I share with you that I’ve been nominated by President-elect Joe Biden to serve as his Secretary of Health and Human Services.

I am proud to have this chance to implement the President-elect’s vision for a better America through the challenging assignments that are in store.

The mission of the Department of Health and Human Services has never been as vital or as urgent as it is today.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout have thrust families across the nation into crisis.

Too many Americans are sick or have lost loved ones and too many have lost their jobs, and with that, their healthcare and hope.

To build back a prosperous America, we need a healthy America. That will be our job on day one.

I am here today because of my parents — Manuel and Maria Teresa. They only had their health and hope when they arrived in California. A road construction worker with a sixth-grade education and a clerical worker who arrived in her teens from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

They built a strong partnership that lasted 67 years. And while they never got to experience the inside of a college, they did get to send their four kids there – as well as to the military.

Now, President-elect Biden has offered me a breathtaking opportunity to work with his team to shape our healthcare future — and fight for working people like my parents.

We know the work ahead will be hard. We must do it together. It will be key to building critical momentum and support for the prevention and treatment of the coronavirus.

jim, as we enter this new chapter, I want to thank you for your support over these many years. As you’ve stood with me, I hope you know I’ve always stood with you — fighting to defend your healthcare, your rights, and your family.

With President-elect Biden leading our charge, our shared fight now continues — and it’s never been more important.

Onward,

Xavier

California State Treasurer Fiona Ma Named
to Group of Global Leaders on Economy and Environment

SACRAMENTO – California State Treasurer Fiona Ma has been named to the Council for Inclusive Capitalism, an historic collaboration of CEOs and global leaders working with the moral guidance of Pope Francis to harness the power of business to make economies more inclusive and sustainable with a movement of bold, business-led actions that span the economic ecosystem.

She joins 27 global leaders across different sectors and industries who are committed to best practices for the development of inclusive economies and societies.

“This is the decade when we must address the environmental and social challenges of the 21st century, stop climate change, and improve people’s lives. It’s an honor to do that with Pope Francis and other forward-thinking people beside me,” said Treasurer Ma.

The Treasurer has committed to developing and promoting the following programs within her office that activates the power of capitalism for all Californians:

1.) Provide a retirement savings program for private sector workers whose employers do not offer a retirement plan by aiming to enroll hundreds of thousands of actively contributing participants into CalSavers by 2023.

2.) Expand low- to moderate-income families’ access to education by extending ScholarShare 529 plan’s Matching Grant Program in 2021 and aims to increase participation levels by 10 percent year over year.

3.) Help people with disabilities realize the opportunity to save and grow their money in tax-advantaged accounts by increasing program enrollment in CalABLE by 250 percent by December 2030.

4.) Promote a more just response to climate change by establishing a Green Bond Honor Roll and enlisting U.S. State Treasurers by 2023 who will make a public commitment to prioritizing the use of green bonds.

Meredith Sumpter, CEO of Council for Inclusive Capitalism, said the organization “is about creating long-term value for businesses, investors, employees, customers, governments and communities” and is guided by an approach that provides equality of opportunity for all people to pursue prosperity and quality of life, irrespective of criteria such as socio-economic background, gender, ethnicity, religion or age; equitable outcomes for those who have the same opportunities and seize them in the same way; fairness across generations so that one generation does not overburden the planet or realize near-term benefits that incur long-term costs, at the cost of future generations; and, fairness to those in society whose circumstances prevent them from full economic participation in the economy.

“You have set before yourselves the goal of extending the opportunities and benefits of our economic system to all people. An Inclusive Capitalism that leaves no one behind, that discards none of our brothers or sisters, is a noble aspiration worthy of your best efforts,” said His Holiness Pope Francis.

Fiona Ma is California’s 34th State Treasurer. She was elected on November 6, 2018 with more votes (7,825,587) than any other candidate for treasurer in the state’s history. She is the first woman of color and the first woman Certified Public Accountant (CPA) elected to the position. The State Treasurer’s Office was created in the California Constitution in 1849. It provides financing for schools, roads, housing, recycling and waste management, hospitals, public facilities, and other crucial infrastructure projects that better the lives of residents. California is the world’s fifth-largest economy and Treasurer Ma is the state’s primary banker. Her office processes more than $2 trillion in transactions within a typical year. She provides transparency and oversight for the government’s investment portfolio and accounts, as well as for the state’s surplus funds. Treasurer Ma oversees an investment portfolio of about $101.4 billion, $32.3 billion of which are local government funds. She serves as agent of sale for all State bonds, and is trustee on outstanding debt of $93 billion.

We made history

We made history

Dear friends:

As California certifies its election results, I know we are all disappointed to have come up short of our goal in California’s 4th District. But we should also celebrate the history we made together:

  • At 194,731 votes, we won the most votes EVER by a non-incumbent from EITHER party in CA-04 — and the sixth highest total EVER among all candidates since 1872.

  • In California, we received more votes than any other Democratic challenger in the state. We also received more votes than 22 winning congressional candidates, including the House Minority Leader.

  • Over 442,000 votes were cast in CA-04 — that’s more than any other congressional district in California — EVER.

To be sure, these successes came against tremendous headwinds. COVID-19 changed almost every aspect of how we ran this campaign. We faced a $250,000 deluge of dark money attacks in the final weeks. And although we had substantially less money to spend on advertising or turnout than comparable campaigns across our country, we persevered together and united Democrats, Independents, and many Republicans behind a different kind of politics that puts community first.

I’m so proud of the campaign we ran. But we still need your help to pay our last remaining bills. Can you chip in $5, $10, $25 or any amount to help us close out 2020?

DONATE

Between now and 2022, congressional district lines will be redrawn. But the cause of real representation for the Sacramento suburbs, the Foothills, Gold Country, Mother Lode and the Sierra will endure. We know we deserve better than we’ve been getting from D.C. partisans, and together in 2020, we built a historic foundation that is uniquely positioned to deliver that kind of change.

So what comes next? First, we need to begin work now to register the large number of new voters who are coming of age or relocating to our communities. And I hope — if you are not already — that you will consider joining a local club, getting involved in the work of local policy making or helping candidates for nonpartisan local offices like County Supervisor, City Council, and School Board. This work has never been more important.

Many have asked if I will consider running again. As I said just days after the election, I am committed to finding ways to serve the people of our community. This includes the possibility of mounting another candidacy for Congress, though I do not expect to formalize any decision for a few months.

For now, I am committed to standing alongside so many new friends and neighbors in the work of supporting the incoming administration, and helping our community heal and recover. I’ll keep working to bridge political divides and mobilize support for an agenda that brings Americans together.

So as this next phase begins, I want you to know that I am forever grateful to our tireless staff, dedicated volunteers, donors, and so many supporters who made history in this election. It is because of you that I have never been more optimistic about the future we can build for our community and our country.

Thank you,

Brynne

P.S. If you can, please consider chipping in to help us pay our last few remaining bills from the 2020 campaign. Thank you again for all of your support!

Congressman TJ Cox on Final Election Results

Today, Congressman TJ Cox called his competitor, David Valadao, to concede the race for California’s 21st Congressional District, and released the following statement:

“Almost three years ago, I entered the race for California’s 21st District as an underdog. But we out-worked our opponent and pulled off the most stunning upset in Central Valley history. Unfortunately, this year due to the Coronavirus, we weren’t able to engage in door-to-door personal canvassing and the election results reflected that.

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished in just two short years. The 27 bills I introduced and the $700 million dollars of water infrastructure funding that I was able to get passed through the House shows what can be accomplished by reaching out and working together with communities and organizations on the issues that are important to all of us.

“Just as important, I was so happy to provide opportunities, internships and jobs to so many young men and women from the Valley. I want to say thank you to them for considering a career in public service.

“My proudest moment as a Member of Congress was when a young woman from the Valley said to me on the day we passed the Dream and Promise Act, ‘Thank you Congressman Cox. You finally make me feel as if someone cares.’ I do care and will continue to fight to make a positive difference in the lives of Central Valley residents.

“I am also very proud of the campaign we’ve run. We didn’t engage in gutter politics. We took our message directly to the people, many of whom never knew they could have a strong voice in their federal government. I never forgot that I work for them. I want to thank my staff, 2,000 volunteers, and over 50,000 donors who believed in our campaign to Put People First.

“I hope Mr. Valadao goes back to Washington humbled by his 2018 loss and has learned he can’t discount communities like Arvin, Lamont, and Mendota, places that went without visits from their congressional representative for years. I hope he will indeed deliver results for the Central Valley, which desperately needs a strong advocate in Washington.”
